6 Fall Makeup Trends to Put on Your Radar

Let the roaring ’20s begin

The jolt of electric hues, the flash of metallic flourishes… The fall/winter 2021 collections weren’t so much a return to normalcy as a release of pent up dress up energy. “Out with the austerity, in with the ostentation,” seemed to be the sentiment. In the beauty department, that translated to impractically bold lips (Who cares if you need to cover them up with a mask!) and fanciful eye adornments that begged to be shown off. Consider this your invitation to be extra—oh-so extra—once again.

Brick red lips

There were red lips of every kind: matte, glossy, intensely pigmented, muted and sheer. But the iteration that felt freshest was the rusty, russet shade shown at Dries Van Noten, Paco Rabanne and Prabal Gurung. Warm and unexpected yet perfectly autumnal. The best part? It’s the kind of colour that looks even better a bit faded and smudged, like you’ve just kissed someone or, you know, taken off your mask.

Neon eyes

A definite departure from the traditional fall shadow roster—think: olive, brown, navy and burgundy—this season’s eye makeup adopted a “brighter is better” motto. Touches of hot pink, acid orange and swimming pool blue topped models’ lids, livening up otherwise neutral ensembles. Your fall basics just got way more exciting.

Lots of blush

Blush has made a noted comeback of late, perhaps as a subconscious attempt to convey health and vitality in the midst of a global pandemic. Or maybe because, well, it just looks really pretty. Either way, makeup artists didn’t skimp on rouge, dusting a generous amount that sometimes spilled beyond cheeks to reach the temples and eyelids.

Punk liner

While the word “punk” does not immediately call to mind the likes of Chanel and Dior, both storied houses borrowed from the movement this season—at least as far as makeup is concerned. Sooty, lived-in liner contrasted plush tweeds and rich jewel tones, balancing elegance with a bit of edge.

Black lipstick

Yes, it’s a statement but it’s such a good one. Jet black lips made appearances at Balenciaga and Mossi, proving undeniably cool. Teamed up with sportswear-inspired pieces and hits of primary colour, the look read more “modern athleisure” than “high school goth.” For a more approachable take, try slicking on a sheer black gloss or a deep plum lippie.

Metallic eyes

Don’t wait until your (hopefully in person) holiday parties to dabble in sparkles. Glints of glitter and washes of metallic—most often in sci-fi silver—were spotted on many runways, paired with everything from cocktail dresses (Coperni) to slouchy knits (Mark Fast) and prim skirt suits (Giambattista Valli).
