When Jennifer Aniston Gives You Hair Tips, You Listen

“On a good hair day, you feel incredible!”

It was the haircut that launched a thousand snips. The year was 1994 and the sitcom Friends attracted around 20 million viewers every Thursday night. That’s where “The Rachel” made its debut, a shaggy side-parted cut that would soon be replicated the world-over. Jennifer Aniston’s status as a hair icon was cemented.

Though she would later admit not being a fan of the high-maintenance cut herself, there’d be no shortage of equally noteworthy styles to follow: flowing locks and curtain bangs for Rock Star, a jaw-skimming bob circa season 7 of Friends, bohemian waves in Along Came Polly

Great for us—an endless source of inspiration to take to the salon—but not so much for Aniston’s hair. The actor reveals that for years she mixed “different potions and lotions together to try to make [her] hair more manageable or appear healthier than it really was after years of abuse.”

That’s how she got the idea to start her own line of haircare. It’s called LolaVie (Lola being one of her nicknames) and has been nearly five years in the making. “I wanted to offer something different—multifunctional products that promote healthy hair, like a Swiss Army knife—while at the same time taking into consideration high performance and being plant-based,” Aniston explains.

Launched last year in the U.S., LolaVie is now finally shipping to Canada. Here, Aniston tells us all about it and walks us through her daily hair routine. (You’re going to want to take notes.)

I’d love for you to take us through your hair journey. Did you always love your hair or did you sort of have to learn to work with it?

“The problem with my hair is that there’s not one strand that’s doing the same thing—ever—and it’s been a challenge for me ever since I was a kid. I think it’s punishment from when I decided to chop my hair off at 13. Looking back, I had this incredible head of hair that was long and straight and down to my waist and then I chopped it off, Dorothy Hamill style. Since that time, I have learned to listen to what my hair is telling me it craves the most. I’ve tried lots of products that didn’t have everything I was looking for, so I created LolaVie. These first two products have truly been game-changers for me.”

What made you want to launch with those two products?

“They’re both time-savers in your haircare routine. The Glossing Detangler was really our first brainchild during product development because I’m such a big detangler user due to the wear and tear I’ve done on my hair over the years. It’s the first step when you get out of the shower, so you don’t rip through your hair. But it’s so much more than that! It’s a heat protectant and shine enhancer. It also improves your hair’s manageability and protects against damage. With the Perfecting Leave-In, I love it just as much. It’s a conditioning cream that does it all: hydrates, fights frizz, protects against damage and gives you that hold you need when you’re styling your hair. So yes, only two products now but more on the way when they’re ‘just right.’”

What’s your typical hair routine?

“It really depends on my schedule and if I’m filming or not, but my hair routine is actually pretty simple. Wash and condition, apply the Glossing Detangler and comb it through, put my hair back up in a towel for 10 minutes, apply a couple pumps of the Perfecting Leave-In, and then I either blow it out or let it dry naturally. Other than those products, I also love repair treatments, dry shampoo and a good hair oil.”

How would you describe your relationship with your hair these days?

“On a good hair day, you feel incredible! Like everyone else, though, I have good and bad hair days… and that’s okay! As we age, our hair ages, too. But also, the wear and tear I, and so many women, put our hair through—hair color, straighteners, curling irons, everything over time—has an effect. That’s why it’s important to find products that can re-nourish our hair and protect against damage.”

Hard to believe you have bad hair days! Do you have a go-to trick for turning those around?

“I don’t always have perfect hair, but a good blowout can always turn a bad hair day around! I’ve been filming recently, so my hair has been under a lot of heat stress, but my LolaVie products have been lifesavers. What I’ve noticed is softer, shinier, healthier-looking and feeling hair.”
