“In the beginning, it felt very very bleak,” Hailey Bieber says about going into lockdown. Like many people, the 23-year-old felt overwhelmed by everything going on, trying to distinguish facts from fake news and not being able to see people. But there were some silver linings, though. “I’m lucky that I didn’t have to do it alone,” Hailey says, alluding to husband Justin. “It was actually a really good time for the two of us to just spend a lot of time together. We had a lot of fun.”

She also got to delve deeper into one of her passions: skincare. “That’s something I really threw myself into during quarantine and I feel like I really learned a lot.” Justin benefited from her hobby, too. “I was helping my husband continue to get his skin in order because sometimes guys need a little more help with that,” she says. “He’s glowing at this point! He looks really good.”

Since saying “I do,” first in a New York City courthouse in November 2018 and again last year in a star-studded affair in South Carolina, the newlyweds have been busy with their respective careers. But for Hailey, there’s also been the added task of coping with an onslaught of negativity. “I married someone who’s been dealing with this since they were a child, so I feel like it opened me up to a new world of really, really intense criticism that I maybe wasn’t prepared for and that I don’t think anybody is ever prepared for.”

It’s meant she’s had to learn to protect herself mentally, she says, whether that’s by switching off comments on her Instagram account or deactivating Twitter. “It actually got to a point where the thought of opening the Twitter app made my stomach drop because there was so much negativity.”

Lockdown has helped, too, in that regard, she says, allowing her to focus on what really matters—the person she wakes up to every morning, their life together, her work—and live “in reality” rather than on social media. All in all, it’s been immensely liberating for her. “I went through a very, very difficult long period of time of being very compared to other people,” she says. “Especially on social media, when you have fan bases and other groups of people perpetuating that story and also comparing you to other people, it feels belittling and like your individuality isn’t enough.”

Let’s just say Justin’s not the only one glowing these days. Hailey’s feeling more confident than ever and it shows. “I’ve never felt more free to be myself and I’ve never felt more like myself,” she says. Here, she shares some of the secrets to her radiance, including the skincare ingredient she can’t live without, the highlighter trick she swears by and the message she has for anyone feeling like they’re not enough.

Skin

“I’m never wearing face makeup under my mask because just like anybody else, no matter how good my skin is, I’m still getting a little bit of maskne.” One of her go-to products to keep her skin in check is this bareMinerals SkinLongevity Long Life Herb Serum (she’s the brand’s clean beauty ambassador). “It has one of my favourite ingredients in the world in it, niacinamide,” she says. The vitamin B3 derivative has been shown to strengthen skin’s barrier and is also purported to improve acne and hyperpigmentation. Hailey even turned Justin onto the ingredient. “Niacinamide was something I had him using a lot of and it totally helped fade acne scars.”

Lashes

Even when she gets her makeup done by a pro, Hailey always insists on applying mascara herself. “This is the mascara I use every single day,” she says of bareMinerals’ Strength & Length Serum-Infused Mascara. It’s powered by a plant-based peptide and is clinically shown to deliver fuller, longer lashes in eight weeks. “I’ve seen a huge difference in my lashes,” says Hailey. “It’s actually really annoying; my husband has the nicest eyelashes I’ve ever seen, and they’re so thick and so long and all of his siblings have the same eyelashes.”

Brows

“I’m very particular about brow gel because it is the one thing I wear every single day,” says Hailey. “Even if I’m wearing zero makeup, I always have brow gel.” She uses shade Coffee of bareMinerals’ Strength & Length Serum-Infused Tinted Brow Gel. “I’m really lazy and I never draw my brows in ever. What I like about using one with a little bit colour in it is you get the happy medium of not having to draw any brows in and not keeping them bare.”

Hair

“All quarantine I let my hair grow out its natural colour so I haven’t put dye on it in months now—I’m rocking the roots,” says Hailey. “I swear I never want to put bleach on my hair again. My hair’s so much healthier.” She’s also been doing lots of deep conditioners and sleeping with hair masks on.

Eyes

“I don’t love a lot on my eyes because I have an eye shape that I feel gets overpowered by a lot of makeup, so I tend to keep it fairly natural,” says Hailey. “The makeup looks I’ve always liked the least on a red carpet when I see them after is when there’s a lot on my eyes.” That’s why she’s a fan of this warm neutral palette. “I have hazel eyes, and one of my favourite colours to use is Truth.” The pink-tinged taupe makes her eyes pop, she says. To amp it up for evening, her makeup artist, Denika Bedrossian, likes to diffuse a bit of shade Wild Child, a rich brown, along Hailey’s top and bottom lashes, finishing with a touch of bronzy Bonfire right in the centre of the lid. “That would be a perfect date night look for me,” says Hailey.

Highlight

“Denika knows that my favourite thing to do is the tiniest bit of highlighter on my nose,” says Hailey. “I don’t like to do contour.” Bedrossian likes to start by lightly sweeping highlighter under the brow bone before taking what’s left on the brush to buff circles right on top of the cheekbone and give a nice sheen to the skin. Last but not least is the nose to make everything look cohesive, she says.

Lips

“My one thing about wearing lipstick that I’ve never really loved is a lot of the time, it gets really dry on the mouth,” says Hailey. Not the case with this formula. “This is so hydrating and never ever makes your lips feel dry.” Her go-to is Focus, a muted mauve. “That colour is one of my favourites because it just mimics my natural lip colour.”

Confidence

“At the end of the day, social media’s really not reality and it can make you feel like you’re not living in reality,” says Hailey. One of the ways she’s navigated cyber-bullying is by speaking with experts to try to understand why it happens in the first place. “That gave me really good insight on why people love to bully on the internet and why they project their own inner fears and thoughts and things they don’t enjoy about themselves onto other people,” she says. Her takeaway? “Everybody has a purpose in life and a reason for being put on this earth.” Instead of comparing ourselves to others, she encourages us to cultivate our individuality. “Being ourselves is the most beautiful gift that we can offer.”
