Emily in Paris Star Camille Razat Shares Her Entire Beauty Routine

Ice cubes, French pharmacy faves and a brow trick she learned from Lily Collins

Haters will hate, but there’s no denying Emily in Paris proved the antidote to many a case of lockdown fatigue. In typical Darren Star fashion, the show whipped the frothiest of fantasies, one in which COVID didn’t exist and social media strategists wore fingerless gloves to the office. Le rêve!

But amidst this Ladurée-coloured universe, where all drama was usually resolved by minute 29, one character stood out as a beacon of believability. Her name was Camille, a quintessential French cool girl who, while dressed to the nines, felt like someone you could actually encounter on the streets of Paris. Maybe it was because she was played by a real-life French cool girl—also named Camille.

“Camille is very chic—me, I’m a little more crazy,” Camille Razat says with a laugh, Zooming in from the Cannes film fest. (For the record, she is the epitome of chic in black-frame glasses and a matching blazer.) Unlike her character, the real Camille insists she is a total nerd who enjoys playing World of Warcraft and once dreamt of becoming a war correspondent.

Still, one thing she most definitely has in common with her alter-ego is that very French knack for making any look—a lacquered red lip, a dramatic shoulder—look as casually thrown on as a white T-shirt and jeans. So naturally, we just had to ask her how she does it.

You’re at the Cannes Film Festival right now. Can you take us behind the scenes a bit. What’s a typical day for you there?

“Usually you wake up—hardly, with tons of coffee—and then you have the glam team come up [to your room] to prep you for all the interviews, and then you have a quick lunch break. Then, eventually, you’re shooting for brands like Chopard all afternoon and then you have the red carpet, and then the dinner. Just very long days.”

What’s it like climbing those iconic steps?

“It’s weird. Honestly, when you’re walking up the stairs, you don’t even think about it because it goes by so fast. People are calling your name, screaming at you—it’s intense, but it lasts 30 seconds. Very intense, but very short.”

You’re an ambassador for L’Oréal Paris, which sponsors the Lights on Women Award at the festival as a way to recognize rising female filmmakers. As a woman in film and television, how would like to see the place of women evolve in your field?

“Well, I would like to see more women because we are 50 per cent of the population and there is not enough of us in cinema, be it as producers or actors or directors. I think L’Oréal Paris’s Lights on Women initiative is amazing because it’s a long-term process. They’re helping young female directors be in the spotlight, and the winner receives money to finance their next project. L’Oréal Paris knows everybody, so they take you seriously. For example, when I told Delphine [Viguier-Hovasse,] the boss of L’Oréal Paris, that I wanted to be a producer, she was like, ‘Okay, wait here,’ and in five minutes, she introduced me to the right people. So, they are really doing it—it’s not just marketing.”

That’s amazing. Are you going to be producing soon?

“Yeah, after shooting Emily in Paris season 3, I will get into it.”

Exciting! Speaking of Emily in Paris, let’s talk about your character, Camille. How much input did you get to have on her overall style and personality?

“It’s really a collaboration between Patricia Field, the stylist, Darren Star [the show’s creator] and me. Each look is picked by the three of us—no one is left out. What I’m trying to do with Emily in Paris is put new designers in the spotlight because I think Instagram is great, but it can also be hard to get noticed. I think Emily in Paris is a wonderful platform for this.”

For sure. You mentioned Patricia Field, who is such a legend, of course, having styled Sex and the City. What is it like collaborating with her?

“I love her because she’s a punk and there are no punks anymore. She arrives at 7 a.m., and she’s smoking. She’s the only one smoking on set with me, so I have a partner. She’s like, ‘You know, it’s going to be a loooong day.’ She’s so funny—I love her!”

She sounds fabulous! How would you say your personal style compares to what you wear on the show?

“I think in my real life, I’m more masculine—more edgy and rock ’n’ roll.”

Do you have a favourite look you’ve worn so far?

“Totally. I think the Saint Laurent heart-shaped dress was amazing.”

Such a good one! Let’s talk beauty now, starting with your gorgeous skin. Please tell us everything!

“Well, ice on the skin when you wake up is a very good way to go because it de-puffs the face and also hydrates because it’s water. And then I use a gua sha [stone] to massage my skin with the Revitalift serum from L’Oréal. It’s amazing. It makes your skin look dewy and glowy, and then I put Augustinus Bader cream and massage my face with the gua sha so the cheekbones and the jawline pop out. After that, I’m ready to apply my makeup. I’m very quick; 10 minutes and I’m done.”

Do you use actual ice cubes?

“Yeah. You can use a [jade] roller you keep in the fridge when you’re starting out because it’s a little bit tough if you’re not used to it. Use it in the morning and then progressively, you can use ice.” [Ed. note: You could also try a handy ice roller for a similar effect.]

You’re a brave woman! Okay, so after the skincare, you apply your makeup. What’s your typical routine for daytime?

“I start with concealer because I have dark circles. My skin is so thin and pale, so I need a very good concealer, actually two, because I’m in between two colours. I use La Mer, which is amazing—very covering. [Ed. note: it’s currently sold out pretty much everywhere, but you could try Clé de Peau concealer as a dupe.] You don’t have to put on a lot. I use a sponge that I dampen just a little bit, so it’s not dry. Then, I do a little bit of L’Oréal Paris bronzer to define the cheekbones and jawline, not like full-on contouring, but just to structure the face a bit. And then I will spend some time on my eyebrows because I think it’s so important, and Lily Collins gave me the best tip. She said, ‘Just use soap.’ I was like, ‘What?’ She said, ‘Yeah, do it.’ I did and it holds and it’s beautiful, so I do that. You take a bar of soap and put some on a brush. The best way is to brush the hairs down first and then up. After that, I use the Voluminous Noir Balm Mascara from L’Oréal because it’s great and it helps your lashes grow. It really works. I’ve been using it for six months and my lashes are crazy long. And that’s it!”

Okay, so we talked about skincare, we talked about makeup; let’s talk about your fantastic hair. How do you get that cool French girl hair?

“I don’t do much, to be honest. I guess I have the best colourist that takes care of my hair. I never blow-dry it; I just let it dry naturally because I think it’s better for the hair because heat can be damaging. What I like to do is put the Extraordinary Oil by L’Oréal, which is amazing because it gives texture and it hydrates the hair. It’s the best product ever. I do a ponytail, let it dry like that and then I take it out.”

French pharmacies are legendary for their incredible beauty products. Do you have a go-to?

“The best sunscreen is Avène and it’s French. It’s the only one I use.”

What’s your number 1 tip for anyone looking to emulate that Parisian flair everyone loves so much?

Don’t put too much makeup—that’s it. Be effortless about it and just try to love yourself as you are.”

Lastly, what would be your ideal day in Paris?

“I love markets, so there is Saint-Ouen, it’s a vintage market where there is furniture, clothes. You can also eat there and it’s really fun. It’s my favourite place. Whenever I have a friend from the U.S. or wherever visiting, I take them there because it’s very Parisian and it’s amazing.”
