Alan Jackson on Being a Good Father
Alan Jackson honors his father in songs like 'Drive (For Daddy Gene),' and he explains his dad taught him how to be an honorable father himself.
"My daddy never said much or gave much advice; he lived it for you," Alan says. "I've always said if my parents did anything good for us it wasn't intentional, they just did what they did and left you alone. They let you make your own way and guided you in the right way instead of pushing us one way or another."
The singer recalls when he announced that he was moving to Nashville, everybody in his hometown of Newnan, Ga. thought he was crazy. His father, on the other hand, was very supportive of the move.
"I'm sure deep down he hated to see me go and he was probably worried that I was gonna get hurt, but he just told me 'Son you can always come back home.' And that's the kind of man he was. He and my mother always supported us."
As for his own daughters, Alan says he hopes they think he has a sense of humor and that he's a fun dad. "I talk to them, if they're dating some boy and I want to know what's going on, I'll just ask them. I'm not one of these daddies who stands there with the shotgun or anything. I do like to know what's going on, because I know what I was like at that age.
"But they're good kids, and they're smart, and they make good choices. So you gotta trust them, and try to raise them well. I mean, my girls are very sweet; I'm very proud of all of of them."
