However, they can last even longer if people avoid common mistakes while charging their iPhones.

It has long been thought that charging your device to 80% instead of 100% can help to maintain battery health.

While many praise the rule, others say it is a waste of time and effort for no real result.

Recently the debate was reopened on Reddit with one user sharing that they followed the rule incessantly for months.

The user noted that they have an iPhone 13 and, after 8 months of only charging their battery up to 80%, their device's maximum capacity is at 100%.

This seemed to impress some iPhone owners, who also swore by the method.

However, others who were not sold on the rule quickly jumped in to share their experiences.

"If you always follow the 20%-80% rule then you're only getting to use 60% of the usable capacity of your iPhone," one person said.

"At that point, does it matter what percentage 'health' says? You're getting no more than 60% out of it regardless, lol," they added.

"I turned optimized charging off and used my iPhone 13 Pro for hours and hours each day charging whenever I wanted and it took about 8 months to hit 99% anyway," a second added.

"Mine is more than 2 years old. I don’t follow any silly 'guidance' around charging. My capacity is 99%," another chimed in.

"Maybe stop wasting time worrying about your phone’s battery and go for a walk or read a book, something worthwhile," they added.

"It has nothing to do with the rule but the usage dictates the battery deterioration," a fourth person remarked.

If you research the topic, you'll find that experts give varying answers on the effectiveness of the 80% rule.

However, if you are looking to extend your device's battery life, we have shared two tips below that are proven to help.

IPHONE BATTERY TIPS

1. Don't use your iPhone while it's charging

We are all guilty of using our iPhone while it’s charging, but this can be extremely damaging to its battery.

There is solid evidence that using your phone while it’s hooked up to the charger not only reduces battery life but disrupts the charge cycle as well.

This is especially the case if you are charging your phone while playing a game or watching videos.

2. Keep your iPhone cool

If you're serious about preserving your iPhone battery, which can save you money in the long run, then you need to keep it cool.

A cool iPhone helps to both maintain its battery’s lifespan and also improve the overall functionality and longevity of your iPhone.

For charging, specifically, this might look like keeping the iPhone in a well-ventilated place, or maybe even taking it out of its case while it re-energizes.

Additionally, you will want to avoid putting your phone on hot dashboards or under your pillow while sleeping.
