Thoughtful optical keyboard for folks wanting a turnkey solution

Thoughtful optical keyboard for folks wanting a turnkey solution
Mechanical keyboards are an entire hobby these days: you can go as deeply down the rabbit hole as you want to with every component, all the way to building your own from scratch from the component parts. That's a fun hobby and a lot of folks enjoy it, but just like building a gaming PC, sometimes you want a reasonable solution that comes right out of the box ready to work at a high level of quality. That's what NZXT is offering here with the Function 2.The design of the model I tested is a very traditional layout with separated cursor control keys and numeric keypad, which is my personal preference. The keys are pushed right to the edge of the board, keeping desk space used to a minimum. A wrist rest that's optional is provided; I liked using it for my own preferences. It connects via magnets to the front and has a whopping ten feet on the bottom to keep it from sliding - while the two parts never permanently connect, I never had problems with it moving around. It's a neat design. The keyswitches here are high quality optical switches, which means there are no electronics in the switch itself - there's a little plunger that pushes down to break a beam of light between an emitter and a sensor. That lets the keboard offer customizability for the point where the keys activate, so you can make it more or less sensitive depending on your preferences. The switches are marketed as NZXT branded, but what I received was made by Gateron - that's a good thing, as they're a well respected optical switch brand. It also means you can swap in your own separate Gateron switches; a switch puller is included and they even give you four each of two replacement switches if you want to increase or decrease force for arrow or WASD keys. You can always buy more. This is billed as 'quiet', but if you're sensitive to noise, it's definitely not the keyboard for you out of the box; quietER is probably a better description. It's nowhere near as clacky as many traditional keyboards are, but it's way louder and more intrusive than, say, a Microsoft Natural Keyboard or any laptop. If you're using this in an office, you're going to annoy your neighbors. Maybe that's your goal. The noise is entirely from the plungers bottoming out in the Gateron switches, no rattle from the case or anything, so if you can get your hands on the 'silent' versions with dampers, that would make this perfection - they seem really rare/unobtainable though.I found the typing experience on this to be pleasant, with very little force required. On the most sensitive setting, I did get the occasional accidental activation from resting my hands on the keys, so some tuning is probably reqired for my habits and preferences there. I felt this was definitely more of a gaming keyboard than an office one for that reason - your gaming activations will happen quickly and reliably, but you might get a few extra unwanted keystrokes in an office environment. It's also not an ergonomic layout, which is what I personally prefer, so much better for suited for gaming when your other hand is going to be on the mouse anyway. Finally, yes, it has RGB lights. They're pleasantly glowy but not overly bright, since they need to filter through the keycaps. (The keycaps are high quality, by the way, with a doubleshot effect for the light lenses.) There's a utility that helps you customize them, and once the customization is done the keyboard remembers your preferences. Other cool features include a volume knob that works very well and side shortcut buttons with no risk of accidental activation. This is a great gaming keyboard that includes a lot of the latest trends that I think will please a lot of people. If you're interested in dabbling in becoming a DIY keyboard hobbyist, it's not a bad canvas to start with and then swap out the underlying keyswitches if you want to explore that route. For office typists, I do think something else might be a better fit, though - this is definitely a purpose built gaming keyboard.

Using the Function, after only ever having the most clicky keyboard known to man for 4 years of my nerdy gamer setup, it's like a whole new experience and maybe getting me more into the customization aspect of keyboards. tldr you know what you will get!

➤ Unboxing it is clean and simple, it's pretty much plug n play, it comes with 8 extra optical switches, red yellow and blue, and comes with everything you need to take the switches out and replace them which as a keyboard customization newbie is very much needed and welcomed, and all the cables you need.

➤ The design is clean and simple, really nothing too crazy, abs plastic for most of the keyboard, normal keycaps, all black in your standard full size setup. I think thats what they're going for is a clean setup with only one logo that doesn't even light up at the top right, its all about the function... get it?? Function? Ok. But the design is very clean, the text is clear even with the lowest lighting setting. I got the full sized black and its full sized but surprisingly skinny in height length, but can be extended with the magnetic wrist support which actually I'm never a fan of but this is rubber and very comfortable with an added texture which I really like and is unique.

➤ Now to how the Function Functions... ok that was the last one.. It's VERY quiet, you still get a satisfying click, but especially at first before you get the wear in, it has that click I want while also being able to hear my own thoughts! It's almost like a surprised click. You can change out the switches but getting this I knew I wanted to have another board thats more stealth. I thought I would maybe miss my big mechanical clicky boi but I might now prefer this more. I did find the springs to be a bit stiff, even though you still dont have to press all the way down for the key to register, which can cause miss-inputs if you fatfinger them. Idk if its the switches or the keys themselves or just how this keyboard is but it detects input at about 40% It has an 8k polling rate, for most of us we won't know what that means but from what I looked up its the standard for good gaming focused keyboards, 100% a fast response. The keys are all easy to press with little indents for finger support. The wrist support is actually very nice and maybe even needed with how much of an angle the front of the board is at, that means without it, its a sharp angle for your hands and you might need this to be comfortable, which also means you need the extra desk space but for most people reading this review you'll probably be well set with that! I have no problem gaming for extended periods and typing for extended periods.

➤ Features: Theres 4 buttons total on this, mute, lock which idk what it does, and the light which has 4 brightness settings. The software I haven't messed with a lot but it does offer some more lighting options and customization presets and all the usual stuff.

Simple "stealth" layout and appearance. Base switches are on the quieter side. Typing is still easy even with the harder springs. Features are basic with added effects in the software. A good addition to a clean setup and getting oneself into the customization area of keyboards.

I really like that they put the volume roller and the macro buttons on the left side. It would have been perfect if they put the number pad on the left side too, but maybe one day (this would open up more space for right handers to move the mouse without running posture similar to a TKL). The switches are nice and smooth, no scratchiness at all and similar to my NK red silks I have on a different keyboard.

The LEDs get very bright, bright enough to reflect on my TV but I keep them minimum brightness since I play at night. The software is pretty straight forward, one of the better ones I think or at least less buggy for me. No complaints really, it feels like a more expensive custom hot swap board but at a lower cost, so a decent value.
