Gaming Peripherals for a Fraction of the Price

Gaming Peripherals for a Fraction of the Price
During this stay at home order, I got a lot of requests from family asking to build a gaming PC for them, but on a limited budget. It’s great to have an RGB themed gaming peripherals but is way too expensive. I was a little skeptical getting this Havit brand, but after using it, I’m now a believer. If there is one thing that left a bitter taste on me, it’s the packaging. I’m quite annoyed that I have to pull out the keyboard and mouse from the small side of the box, all other KB boxes I had opens from the top. But other than that, everything is great. First, the build quality, the top frame is made of aluminum. It feels very durable and can hardly flex at all. Both the mouse and keyboard have braided cables, which I believe should become the standard for PC peripherals. The detachable palm rest is made of plastic and not cushion. Although I feel that the palm rest is fine for a couple of hours playing, but some people may find it hard on the wrist for longer periods of time, but you can always remove it if you don’t like it. Both the KB caps and mouse are made of premium plastic, similar materials you’ll get from those $200 branded ones. I love mechanical keyboards, and this keyboard uses the blue switches. The keys are very clicky, and yet a little softer or less resistance compared to other blue switches. I would say the key feels something in between of blue and brown switches. I played a couple of fast paced FPS games, and the response time for both KB and mouse is outstanding. No lag or missed keys while playing. One thing about the mouse, is that although it has 6 different DPI settings, it doesn’t have 1200 DPI whish is the one I got used too. But the 1600 DPI setting doesn’t feel a whole lot of different anyways and should be good for the majority.Overall, I am surprised how good this keyboard and mouse combo is. Is it great for gaming? Oh yeah it is great. Is it good for everyday casual use? Of course, yes. Is it durable? Solid aluminum frame, yes. Will I buy this again? Definitely. Highly recommended.

*** Update 9/2/2020 ***

Havit reached out to me after seeing my original review (below). I am revising my review to 5 star to consider the excellent customer support (refund). I REALLY appreciate it when a company is proactive in keeping customers happy.

This keyboard is still a really cool gaming keyboard, with enough flashly lights and shortcuts for any hardcore gamer on a budget. For fast typing, I may have just gotten a bad batch of the bunch.

*** Original Review ***

I saw a lot of excellent reviews and was looking for a decent mechanical keyboard to use for typing. As an inexpensive keyboard and my first LED lit one, it's not bad. But I'm not too impressed with the performance. My pros and cons:

Pros:
- No driver installation needed for any of the mouse functions. This was really convenient. The controlling of the LED patterns, speed, brightness, etc. etc are all built directly into it.
- The LED lights are cool. It's always about the lights! The included mouse also has some pretty neat colors as well.
- Mouse DPI controls are built right in with the various levels. The built-in LED strip changes color to indicate the DPI settnig.
- Has a nice mechanical click feeling. But that's about it.

Cons:
- I CANNOT TYPE CORRECTLY ON THIS KEYBOARD. I can average around 90-100 WPM on a membrane keyboard, but for some reason the keys are registering out of order a LOT. Here is an example sentence with no corrections:
"The quick brow nfox jumped over the lazy sleeping dog. The quic kbrown fox jumped over the lazy sleeping dog.
The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy sleeping dog . The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy sleping dog.
The quick brown fox jumped voer the lazy sleeping dog The quick brown fox jumped over the alzy sleepnig dog."
- I went about 70 WPM and can usually run that quick without making that many mistakes. I'm noticing that the "i" key and the spacebar sometimes doesn't register after the audible "click". Maybe it's me, but characters are also showing up out of order (e.g., "voer" instead of "over")
- The mouse is too big. I don't have HUGE hands. But I have a piano player's fingers (long) and I am finding that the body of the mouse feels just a little too large
- Did I mention that sometimes the keys don't register?

Maybe I got a bum keyboard, or maybe I'm just not used to it yet. I honestly don't like how much the key has to travel from being pressed to registering it, and as a fast(ish) typer it really is annoying me.

I bought this keyboard a month ago and so far I haven't had any issues. This is my first time playing any games on keyboard so I probably don't know very well, but it feels pretty nice when I play val. The keyboard is pretty loud but that's to be expected considering the type of keys these are. I wasn't expecting much from the mouse but it's actually nice, especially since you can easily control the dpi and color patterns with the two buttons under the scroll. The shape is good for a normal grip but it's a bit uncomfortable to do a claw grip if that's what you prefer, so you'd have to get a different mouse. Both the mouse and keyboard are with wires and the wire can't be detached for both. If you don't have a decent amount of space on your table this may not be the best choice. The keys are satisfying when you type, as well as the sound. They're very stable, but I'd suggest getting o-rings if you want them to sound a little clearer since it'll lessen the sound of plastic on plastic from the keys hitting the base of the board. From what I've experienced so far it seems better with o-rings. The key height and spacing is good too so it should be pretty comfortable, but if it's your first time getting a mechanical keyboard like it was for me, it could take a week or so to get used to. The lighting is controllable to your liking and you can also change the patterns and colors easily.

My expectations were not that high given the price. I am pleasantly surprised. For the price point, the keyboard works very well and has a decent feel. Same with the mouse, even for FPS twitch gaming.

My frame of reference is expensive high performance mechanical keyboards. I spend so much time driving one that a very good keyboard is a necessity. This product may not be that, but I have zero issues using it for casual gaming or general use. I do not use it solely, or frequently for that matter, and would not expect it to hold up to near constant professional use over time. For periodic use with a laptop and guest gaming rig it has been great. Have I mentioned the annoying RGBs?

The keyboard has a pleasing clicky and positive feel. The mouse is responsive, reasonably fast and accurate. Mouse buttons are fine. The mouse itself is a little larger than many and doesn't feel quite as nice as many high end gaming mice, but it is quite serviceable once one adapts to it.

The RGB lighting is something I detest. Others will consider it an attractive feature. Had there been a non-RGB version I would have bought it. Thankfully, it can be controlled. It would be nice to have a hard switch to disable it. The software for the keyboard from Havit's site works well to tame to RGBs antics.

If you need an inexpensive keyboard and mouse combo, and like LED silliness, this may be the keyboard for you. Even if you don't want the LED behaviors, a few keystrokes should allow you to find a tolerable lighting mode.

To be clear, I'd buy this again if there wasn't something comparable available without RGB. I don't expect it to last forever but at this price, it is hard to go wrong. Easily bests the truly disposable keyboards often sold at almost the price of this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing upgrade keyboard... but
Reviewed in Canada on August 11, 2020
If you are here for the quick overall: yes I 100% recommend this keyboard kit for anyone who is looking to upgrade a old keyboard, the RGB on this keyboard is really impressive with lots of options and customizable presets and the mouse is a bit big thats it.
But if you are here for a more in depth talk through on all my thoughts, stick around!
To start with the keyboard:
The keyboard for me was a upgrade from the razer blackwidow stealth tournament edition 2013 with cherry mx brown switches. And I was overall impressed with the keyboard out of the box
One thing ill mention right away is that the switches on this havit keyboard are forsure a fake of the cherry mx blue switch, but a good one, the only thing i have to say about it is that the switch is just ever so slightly more stiff then the real ones but are a alot less stiff then my old keyboard with cherry mx browns, the keyboard has a detachable wrist rest on it that has a bit of adjustability and it feels alot better to type with then it looks.
One con i have for the keyboard is that the keys are a little bit more crammed in there then my old keyboard but not unusable by any means.
The only other con I have for they keyboard is that on some presets the rgb can become very overwhelming very easy
Now lets get to the but. The big but.
The mouse:
One thing I have seen consistently with these reviews is the mouse being awkward or big, I can say with out a doubt that it is true. Now to note I have very large hands and this will come into play.
As soon as I took the mouse out I really enjoyed the overall quality of the mouse considering the price I paid for this. I was expecting alot worse. But as soon as I plugged it in and used it for a bit I noticed that it became uncomfortable to use for me in the picture I have a steelseries rival 3 mouse beside it that I had bought for $37 on sale a few months back, and its a fairly large mouse alone compaired to the one I had before it which was a red dragon keyboard kit mouse that was replaced due to it breaking. But back to the havit mouse.
The mouse it a bit longer making it a bit weird to find the right spot to hold it for the left and right clicks and the scroll wheel where its not rubbing on my wrist and the curve on the mouse is alot higher and steeper then my steelseries mouse I own as my main. The mouse is also a bit wider then my steel series mouse which makes It hard to grip for games like cs go, so basically this mouse makes my hands feel small which if it makes my hands feel small imagine buying this for a son or daughter thats just getting into using computers. But a pro is that the dpi range is good and the rgb is just as stunning as the keyboard but the rgb is not as good as my steelseries mouse, if you are going from having no keyboard or mouse this mouse could be really good after adjustment and getting used too, but personally considering I already own one ill just keep it as a spare.
Overall if you are looking for a upgrade from a office keyboard and mouse or just got your first pc and need a keyboard and mouse or are just looking to upgrade just a keyboard this is an amazing option and is worth every penny.

Starting off, the rgbs lighting is fantastic, and entrancing, looking at the keyboard on the main setting makes the keyboard look like it's moving in a wave pattern, and that the keys are actually moving. It's nice and loud as mechanical keyboards are supposed to be as well. The only downside is the mouse, even though it is very comfortable, It has started having drift after about 2 weeks of use, I'm not sure if this is an actual hardware issue or if the cable is a little too heavy over the back of my desk and having that pull it, but either way it's still a great buy for the price

Great keyboard and mouse. Good value for what you pay, and you can't go wrong for the price. It compares well even to more expensive ones under $100. The light options are great and it's bright enough to see during the day. The keys are pretty high so easy to click, will take some getting used to with my big fingers to not click neighbouring keys, but that's fine. Good clicking sound, not too loud but satisfyingly loud enough without annoying the co-workers. Keyboard comes with a wrist attachment that clicks into the bottom for wrist rest. The mouse is great too. Fairly large but that's good for me since I have big hands.
