The New York Post is committed to the future of journalism and we are excited to bring back our Scholars Contest for 2024, in participation with Command Education, the nation's leader in college consulting.

This exciting writing contest is open to high school students.

STUDENTS CAN WIN:

A chance to have their article published

A special Scholars Masterclass

An immersive Discovery Day

A College prep strategy session

A Grant for their High School

Those taking on the challenge will battle for a shot at having their article published in a special pull-out section within the New York Post and on nypost.com - one of the biggest news sites in the United States.

All writers of published submissions will be invited to the New York Post for a special Scholars Masterclass. The top three honorees will also receive an immersive New York Post Discovery Day tailored to their interests, a college prep training with our partner, Command Education, and a grant for their school.

And that’s not all, we’re also giving away grants to the top three schools with the most student submissions!

Here are some helpful tips to get started

00:00
--:--

Choose between the following three formats of articles: News, Features, or Opinion. Make sure you check out the difference in writing styles for each!

Find inspiration for a school or education-related article around the following topics: News, Sports, Business, Fashion, Entertainment, Tech, Health, and Travel.

For example, you could write a news story based on a graduation ceremony, write a review of your school’s play, write a news article about how technology helped or hindered learning during the pandemic, or write a feature on a school trip.

Remember, this is an article, not an essay - so the writing style is very different! Look at The Post in print and online and study carefully how the stories are constructed.

Research and include facts or studies you can attribute to sources.

Interview your peers and teachers and include their quotes. Seek different perspectives to give stories balance. Quotes bring stories alive!

Write in short sentences using punchy words. The beginning of your article is the most important part: It is where you capture the readers’ attention and set the tone and context for your entire piece. We also like to see a great ending paragraph.

As a guide, a news story is around 600 words, a feature is 1,500 to 2,000 words and an opinion piece is around 1,000 words.

We are looking for written submissions, but feel free to take pictures or shoot video to accompany your carefully crafted words.
