University of Georgia Introduces Virtual Tour of Residence Halls

University Housing at the University of Georgia proudly unveils its latest innovation: a state-of-the-art virtual tour offering prospective students and their supporters an immersive exploration of its 23 residence halls wherever they are. This initiative marks a significant leap forward in modernizing the department’s approach to showcasing its facilities, providing a digital experience that reflects the university’s commitment to innovation.

University Housing’s new virtual tour utilizes 360-degree images that allow users to virtually walk through public spaces, student rooms and apartments to gain a genuine sense of what it’s like to be there. The tour, accessible at https://housing.uga.edu/sa_vrtour/, is the culmination of a year and a half of development by University Housing’s Web Developer Principal, Brent Betz. Betz developed the tour using a combination of custom HTML, drone technology and 360-degree imaging in an effort to meet stakeholder demand for more detailed information about residence halls.

“In today’s culture, providing an immersive and convenient experience for prospective students is essential,” said University Housing Assistant Director for Communications, Carrie Campbell. “The new virtual tour revolutionizes the way we showcase our residence halls, offering an unparalleled level of detail and accessibility that even in-person tours can’t match.”

The transition to a virtual tour comes as in-person tours have become impractical given housing’s focus on renovation and maintenance projects over the summer, as well as high demand for spaces during the academic year. By leveraging existing technology, the department aims to enhance customer service—providing detailed and immersive insights for prospective students and their families—even in the absence of physical tours.

“The virtual tour not only benefits prospective students but also serves as a valuable reference for our staff,” explains Campbell. “It ensures accurate and up-to-date information about our residence halls is readily available, further enhancing our commitment to transparency and excellence in customer service.”

Moreover, the virtual tour aligns with current technology trends, creating a sense of place and fostering a positive impression of University Housing among prospective students. By embracing innovation and leveraging digital resources, the department continues to prioritize the student experience.
