I don’t want to brag, but I have a green thumb. It’s actually green as hell; I pride myself on just how green it is. I’ve been collecting plants for the past seven years and I’ve only ever killed two, both of which were palms. (I live in Chicago. You can do the math on why that happened.)

That said, watering plants has become a burden. Right now, I have 32 scattered around my apartment and my main watering day is on Saturday. Currently, it takes me a solid hour to give everyone the little drink they deserve. That’s why when I heard about Easyplant’s self-watering planters, I knew I had to give ‘em a shot.

And so, last July, Easyplant sent me two plants — a cast iron plant and a money tree — straight to my front door within a few days. Both were already set within their planters, so all I had to do was fill up the basin in each one with some water. (When the plants are feeling thirsty, the pots are designed to feed water into the soil automatically so I don’t have to.) I placed both near one another, hugging a velvet orange chair I have in my bedroom — a spot that gets just enough light to fully ensure their needs are met.

Since I set the planters up roughly seven months ago, I’ve only filled the basin a handful of times. Both plants are still thriving. The whole contraption is so low-maintenance that I honestly started to convince myself that the plants were fake. (They’re not. They’re very real — something I discovered after cutting leaves off of both as an experiment.)

Though these planters make impeccable additions to the homes of those with black thumbs, I find that, as a self-proclaimed plant fairy, they’re still exciting and provide me with some relief. It feels great to take care of a real plant without ever really taking care of it. I let them both vibe out on their own journey, only giving them attention once every month and a half.

As for the other thirty plants I’ve become a father to? Well, those duties will never end.
