San Antonio Spurs rookie Stephon Castle is the real deal

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The San Antonio Spurs put a lot of their proverbial eggs in a single basket by taking unfinished point guard (or maybe he is a wing?) prospect Stephon Castle out of the University of Connecticut at No. 4 overall in the 2024 NBA draft. But in the smallest of sample sizes in which we saw the New York native show out with the Summer Spurs vs. the Charlotte Hornets in Game 1 of the California Classic Summer League slate of games, it is looking like that move was the right call.

The former Husky was among the best players on the court in any games played at the California Classic, putting up good scoring, rebounding, and passing numbers in limited minutes while nailing half of his 4 attempts from beyond the arc.

If Castle can hit that jump shot from deep with any sort of regularity close to league average, he will be a plus player all around for the Spurs — and if he gets good at it, they hit a home run in the draft.

The folks behind the “TSR Sports” YouTube channel took a closer look at his first exhibition game with San Antonio in the clip embedded above. Be sure to check it out!
