Junior Tennis

Sportsmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center is part of the US Tennis Association’s National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) network, one of more than 600 chapters throughout the United States offering tennis, academic and social programs for children of all ages. Sportsmen’s offers Junior tennis clinics, camps and lessons for children ages 5 and up, in seven skill levels from beginner through highly competitive tennis. Tennis clinics are offered Monday through Friday during out-of-school time hours, as well as Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons. We host 24 tournaments per year, sanctioned by the USTA, and offer tennis camps and programs during all Boston Public School vacation weeks, some independent school breaks, and during summer vacation. Private lessons are available, as well as semi-private and group lessons for up to 4 children at approximately the same age and/or skill level.

10 & Under

Like the USTA, Sportsmen’s has adopted a modified tennis program for young children and for anyone just learning the sport. Using smaller courts and racquets and lower compression balls, we introduce children to tennis using a fun, games-based approach. No experience is necessary, and we supply racquets. Tennis shoes are a must, and children should be capable of following basic instructions.

Toddler Tennis

These sessions are paused temporarily. Please call the front desk for more information. 617-288-9092

Toddler Tennis is for children aged 2 to 4 who are ready to learn the basics of tennis and fundamental athletic skills using a games-based approach, preferably alongside a parent or guardian. Athletic shoes are required for children and adults on court. Racquets are provided. Sessions require at least 4 registered participants.

Red Tennis

Red Tennis welcomes students up to 7 years old who have not played tennis before. It focuses on the basic motor skills and athletic capabilities needed as a foundation for tennis, and simple technical fundamentals. Parents will be advised when students are ready to move to the next level.

Orange Tennis

Orange tennis is one of our favorite programs on the developmental side! Orange Tennis is for students who have progressed from Red Tennis, can demonstrate good control of the ball on the 36’court and are able to cover the 36’ court. It builds upon the motor skills and athletic capabilities developed in Red Tennis, and emphasizes agility, balance and coordination. Technical fundamentals are introduced and developed alongside basic skills. Orange Tennis is taught using the same progressive teaching methodology as Red Tennis, but with an increasing emphasis on repetition of mastered tasks.

Competitive Tennis

Sportsmen’s offers three levels of training for Juniors playing competitive tennis. Many of our juniors hold local and regional rankings, and several have national rankings as well. We typically have a team of Juniors playing in the New England Sectionals, and traveling out of state to compete in various national tournaments.

Regular tournament competition is a requirement for admission into the Tournament Training program. Sportsmen’s hosts more than 2 dozen tournaments per year, and players often travel together to tournaments in Nashua, Western MA, and other New England tournament sites.

Tournament Training clinics maintain small player-to-coach ratios and utilize drills that emphasize aggressive, progressive repetition to simulate match play and move players gently beyond their comfort level.
