Zavala is in the clubhouse ahead of Tuesday's game versus the Orioles, reports Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com.
Mitch Garver is dealing with a wrist injury, and Zavala has joined the Mariners as potential catching depth. It remains to be seen if the 33-year-old is with the club as a member of the taxi squad or if he's being added to the active roster. Zavala was designated for assignment in mid-June, so Seattle would still need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster even if Garver moves to the injured list.
Garver will serve as Seattle's backup catcher moving forward after Seby Zavala was designated for assignment Tuesday.
Garver has started 59 of the Mariners' 75 games this season, but only four of those starts have come behind the plate. Cal Raleigh will continue to work as Seattle's primary backstop, but Garver should now see occasional starts at catcher in addition to serving as a designated hitter. The 33-year-old has a .179/.301/.358 slash line this season but has shown signs of life in June with a .927 OPS in 44 at-bats.
Mariners pitching coach Pete Woodworth indicated Wednesday that Baumann could work his way into a high-leverage bullpen role, reports Brent Stecker of SeattleSprots.com.
The right-hander was acquired from Balitmore in late May after being designated for assignment and has yet to allow an earned run in four appearances for Seattle. Baumann hasn't consistently filled a high-leverage role as a big leaguer, but he posted a 3.76 ERA and tallied six holds last season for the Orioles. Andres Munoz has a clear hold on the closer role, but it's possible Baumann joins Ryne Stanek in the setup mix.
Raley's career in Seattle got off to a slow start as he posted a .505 OPS and 30.4 percent strikeout rate in March and April, but his bat has come alive this month. The 29-year-old opened the campaign with a semi-regular spot in the lineup, but he's now started 12 of the past 13 games. Raley has seen most of his action in the corner outfield but also has four starts at first base.
J.P. Crawford is expected to return from his oblique injury during the four-game series against the Yankees that begins Monday, per Daniel Kramer of MLB.com, which will bring an end to Moore's run as the Mariners' starting shortstop.
Crawford has been sidelined since April 24, and Moore has started all but two games at shortstop during the absence. Moore went 0-for-2 with two walks and a run in Sunday's loss to the Orioles, but he entered the contest with an .858 OPS in 22 games since Crawford went down. Moore could pick up some playing time at second base if Jorge Polanco's hamstring issue necessitates a trip to the injured list.
Clase is with the Mariners as a member of the taxi squad for Sunday's game against the Orioles, reports Daniel Kramer of MLB.com.
The 21-year-old could be added to the active roster in the coming days, but for now he'll serve as emergency outfield depth. Clase posted a .509 OPS in nine games while up with the Mariners in April, though he has an .878 OPS through 28 contests with Triple-A Tacoma this year.
Rivas has joined the Mariners as a member of the taxi squad Thursday while J.P. Crawford deals with an oblique injury, per Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM.
Crawford is sitting out Thursday for the second straight game, but it remains to be seen if he'll require a stint on the injured list. Rivas joined the Mariners as a non-roster invitee in January and has enjoyed a strong start at Triple-A Tacoma with an .884 OPS and five steals in 18 games. The 26-year-old is unlikely to have a regular role if added to the active roster, with Dylan Moore likely to take over at shortstop for Seattle.
Miller has induced a swing-and-miss on 33 percent of the swings on his new splitter through four starts, per Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times.
Miller has pitched well early in 2024 with a 1.85 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 24:7 K:BB across 24.1 innings, and the splitter has clearly played a role in that success. The right-hander is also using the new pitch at a decent clip of 19.4 percent, trailing only his four-seam fastball and sinker. It's still a small sample size, but Miller is building on his strong 2023 rookie campaign.
Mariners manager Scott Servais said Sunday that Rodriguez is managing some issues with swing timing early in the season, reports Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times.
The center fielder raked during spring training with a 1.179 OPS in 14 Cactus League games, but the start of the regular season has brought far different results.
Rodriguez went 1-for-5 with four strikeouts Wednesday against the Blue Jays, bringing his slash line to .196/.255/.216 through 55 plate appearances. Rodriguez has never been a fast starter with a .628 OPS during March and April for his career, but his struggles early in 2024 would set a new low.
The Baseball Hall of Fame welcomed Adrian Beltre, Todd Helton, Jim Leyland and Joe Mauer during its 2024 induction ceremony.
Former Tennessee baseball star and L.A. Angels reliever Ben Joyce added to his lore with the fastest pitch of the 2024 MLB season at 104.5 mph.
Logan Gilbert ranks among the top-10 pitchers in the American League in several major categories, including ERA (2.91) and WHIP (0.92).
Mike Ford batted .455 with three homers in 33 at-bats for the Reds during spring training.
The 2024 MLB Draft is less than two weeks away and there's debate over who could go No. 1 overall. Here's what experts are predicting.
