Leveraging Curiosity to Care for An Aging Population

Presentation of a paper given at the Human Computer Interaction International (HCII) conference in Washington, DC on July 4, 2024.

The United States is experiencing a silver tsunami: an aging nation with baby boomers becoming the largest elderly population in the country's history. This demographic shift poses challenges for maintaining mobility and independence among older individuals. This paper will demonstrate an ongoing research project conducted for a major automotive maker that explores how an early research-and-development initiative might lengthen the driving years for older drivers.

 Two-thirds of participants were unaware of most safety features in their vehicles. n= 141. More than 90% of respondents were 55+. Desire to Learn
 Participants showed an interest in learning more about these safety features. Open to Recommendations
 Participants were open to receiving personalized, proactive recommendations from their vehicles. 56% were willing to take a confidential assessment in order to become a better driver. 91% were open to receiving personalized recommendations of vehicle safety features. 86% would like the vehicle to proactively inform them of safety features. Approach Understand what consumers know about vehicle’s current safety features. Outcomes • What consumers might expect in a safety checkup
