Early warning systems are essential in protecting lives during climate disasters. To be truly effective, they must be adapted to local contexts. In Somalia, our ringtone alert system reaches even the most remote areas, providing critical weather alerts. “My name is Ahmed Hassan Dige. I was born and raised in the countryside of Hargelle, in the Afdheer region of the Somali Regional State. In my early years, I worked hard as a herder to support my family. Unfortunately, at the age of 11, I lost my sight. In 2011, I listened to an interview on the BBC with the principal of the Al-Nur School for the Blind, a primary school supported by the Hormuud Salaam Foundation. Inspired by the interview, I decided to seek education in Mogadishu. I traveled on foot with nomadic individuals who were transporting livestock to the town of Elbarde in the Bakool region. After nine days of traveling, I reached Elbarde and continued my journey to Mogadishu by vehicle, where I joined the Al-Nur School for the Blind. At that time, I knew no one in Mogadishu. I enrolled in the boarding section of the school, where I received free education, healthcare, and accommodation. Upon completing my primary school education at Al-Nur, the school administration transferred us to Imam Shafi'i Secondary School to integrate with sighted students and better prepare for university. The Hormuud Salaam Foundation generously covered our educational expenses. Following a long and challenging academic journey, I graduated this year from the Faculty of Social Sciences at Mogadishu University. I am currently serving as the principal of the Daryeel School in the Kaxda district of Mogadishu, where we provide free education to blind and underprivileged children. I take great pride in being a self-reliant blind father who supports his family. My blindness has not been a barrier to my education, employment, or serving my community.” This is the story of Ahmed Hassan Dige, one of the first graduates of the Al-Nur School for the Blind, sponsored by @hsfsomalia. #AlNurSchool #EducationForAll #CommunitySupport #SomaliasSuccessStory

In Somalia, our communities are on the frontlines of the global climate crisis. Meaningful change, as a product of close publicprivate sector collaboration, is needed to intervene as drought and floods threaten to destabilise livelihoods and economic growth. Last week, alongside other private sector players, we signed an MoU with Somalia’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, to unite in the effort to tackle climate challenges and promote green energy. Access to healthcare is so important for Somalia’s development. That’s why we're pleased to share that the first group of Somali children with heart conditions, and their families, have arrived in Milan for life-changing treatment from specialist doctors. This journey is made possible through Hormuud Salaam Foundation’s collaboration with an Italian NGO, the Italian government and Somali community association “Mother and Child Care”. As Somalia’s largest private philanthropic organisation, we’re committed to extending a healthcare lifeline to Somalis when they need it. A special thanks to Ms. Adna Macallin Abdurahman, the Italian government, Welcare Hospital, and the Somali Ministry of Health for the parts they played in making this happen.
