How much do smallholders earn now vs. before? A few weeks ago, I spoke with a project manager in an African country about his efforts to support smallholders. He proudly shared details about the technologies, inputs, financial assistance, the number of villages involved, and the project's growth and plans. After absorbing all the details, I asked the project manager: "How much do the smallholders earn now compared to before? And how does it compare to those not in the project?" There was silence. Eventually, with some shame and an apologetic tone, he admitted, "I don't know." Do you know such cases? This scenario is all too common. I remember a farmer expressing his frustration with these words: "Different projects come and go, representatives make grand promises, but we remain in the same place, in the same poverty." Successful projects boast that farmers' incomes have increased by 50% after three years. What do you think? Raising income from less than $1 a day to $1.50 a day over three years is an outstanding achievement. But is it sufficient, and is this the goal we aim for? Sharing some thoughts and insights ahead of the launch of our research report on July 30, 2024, in Abidjan.  Addressing this issue is key to ensuring a fairer and more sustainable future for cocoa farmers in West Africa. Producing cocoa is intensive and costly, involving significant investments in high-quality seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, fair wages for labor, securing and maintaining arable land, proper storage and transportation facilities, and access to affordable credit. When prices paid to farmers don't reflect these expenses, it leads to poverty, debt, and a lack of investment, preventing farm improvements. To create a more equitable cocoa industry, we must rethink how cocoa is priced. *Policies like the Living Income Differential (LID) in Ghana and Cote D’Ivoire need greater industry support and transparency. * Revenue-sharing models should ensure a larger share of cocoa sales revenue goes to farmers. *We need to focus on enhancing profitability rather than just increasing productivity and empower cooperatives to give farmers a stronger voice in pricing decisions. *Cocoa prices must cover actual production expenses. A key takeaway from the World Cocoa Conference was the need to decommoditize cocoa. By treating cocoa as more than just a commodity, we can ensure farmers are fairly compensated for their labor and the unique qualities of their produce are recognized and valued. Understanding and addressing the true cost of cocoa production is essential for building a sustainable and equitable industry. I invite you to join us in this crucial conversation.
