For Children

Programming for children from birth to seventeen has been designed to equip children from underserved communities with the physical, mental, and developmental assets that facilitate school and life success. Programming and support for school-aged children, tweens, and teens are also offered at Smart sites.

For Families

Smart addresses the needs of every member of the family. Smart recognizes and builds on caregivers’ strengths. Caregivers have access to crisis intervention and family stabilization services. They are encouraged to set long- and short-term goals to improve their economic status and to overcome social challenges. Opportunities to enroll in adult education and career exploration programming are open to all Smart caregivers.

For Communities

Our community-based work is designed to improve families’ access to, and use of, existing community services, while also ensuring the highest-quality services through close partnerships with other agencies. The Smart model works to engage and enlist the support of both formal and informal stakeholders, business proprietors, and other community-support agencies.

Initiated with the support of Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Smart from the Start was launched in 2008 as a public/private partnership with the City of Boston.  After four years and tremendous growth and success, in 2012 we became an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with our own fully functioning Board of Directors.  We still enjoy a strong partnership with the City of Boston, Boston Centers for Youth and Families (BCYF), and the Boston Housing Authority (BHA), who remain among our biggest funders and providers of in-kind support today.

One of Smart’s most significant accomplishments is our expansion from our 3 pilot communities of Charlestown, Mattapan, and Roslindale to include the neighborhoods of Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Lower Roxbury, South Boston, and the South End in seven short years.  We have a total of 36 sites where Smart from the Start programs are facilitated in the eight urban communities across the City of Boston.

Please call Smart from the Start’s headquarters at 857-308-3000 to be directed to the appropriate Program Coordinator to schedule a visit.  We look forward to working together!

Meet Patrice

“Smart has a program for everyone in your entire family… Once I got help (at Smart) I was able to be a better mom, a better person and now I am ready to give back to the community.”  – Patrice

Trained in restorative justice and mental health first aid, Patrice is one of our Family Leaders who works to strengthen Smart’s programming and outreach. Through Smart, Patrice was able to receive the early intervention her son needed to thrive and now spends time giving back to the Smart community.
