Congratulations to Zer’ah, Nicole, Anubis, Osiris and Nolawi, the winners of the 2nd annual Central Community Spelling Bee.

The bee, coordinated by our Community Listeners La Queta Worley and Kellie Morris, took place on Saturday, May 18, at the Sterling branch of the Cleveland Public Library.

For two hours on Saturday afternoon, in a packed room filled with about 20 parents, children and volunteers, 14 children competed in three rounds. Twenty-four children registered for the bee.

Everyone clapped in support of the brave competitors, who stood in front of the room to spell words. All participants received prizes after the bee, including basketballs, gift bags and personal hygiene supplies. First-place winners took home trophies.

Artist and activist Gwen Garth, of the nonprofit Kings and Queens of Art, Margaret Bernstein, of WKYC-TV, and consultant Patti Choby served as volunteer judges.

“This is very much needed in the community,” Garth said after the bee as she reflected on the afternoon.

“It is,” added Worley.

“Some [children] started with their arms crossed, looking nervous,” Garth continued. “But they smiling by the end!”
