To try and help people beat the heat, Cleveland has extended the hours of six of its recreation centers designated as neighborhood “cooling centers” through Friday. The centers are air-conditioned and open to the public, city officials said in a release.

“We’re particularly worried about people who can’t get out of the sun and into the shade. That includes people who are unsheltered and living on the street,” said David Margolius, a doctor and Cleveland’s public health director.

With temperatures expected to hover near 90 degrees all week, people – particularly those without air-conditioning – are vulnerable to health conditions such as sunburn, cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The most serious condition – heat stroke – requires immediate medical attention.

Nausea, vomiting, headaches and dry skin are some common symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, according to Margolius.

“Above all, if you don’t feel well, don’t just ignore it – try to get to a cooler place.”

Seniors and people who are frail are at an increased risk, said Margolius.

“Checking in on your neighbors who may not have someone checking in on them is going to be really important,” he said.

All six cooling centers are open each day this week – including Wednesday which is Juneteenth. The centers are open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and also plan to serve lunch to kids who are 18 and younger from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
