Signal Cleveland’s Power Rankings is a weekly roundup of the people, places and things wielding their power, for better or worse, in Greater Cleveland. Last week, a meatball smash and overseas landlords made the cut.

1. Amendment campaigns

A lot of people worked very hard to get proposed state constitutional amendments on the November ballot. Some campaigns were successful (Citizens Not Politicians, to end gerrymandering), some were not (Raise the Wage Ohio), but they all deserve respect for refusing to accept Columbus gridlock. And there’s always next year.

2. Rock Hall

Boomers from around the region flocked to the museum’s Library and Archives at Cuyahoga Community College for an exhibit on the World Series of Rock. Those who want to keep the party going can check out the WMMS Buzzard’s 50th Birthday Party Saturday in Grafton.

3. Donovan Mitchell

The Cavs’ all-star guard signed a three-year contract extension worth $150 million.

4. Cleveland Planning Commission

The tweet heard ’round the 15-Minute City:

5. Dogs

For getting through another holiday weekend of hoomans’ stupid, scary sky booms.

6. Cuyahoga River

Still rolling, 55 years after the fire that made it nationally famous and helped launch the modern environmental movement. When is Randy Newman gonna write a song about that?

Important stories are hiding everywhere, and my favorite part of journalism has always been the collaboration, working with colleagues to find the patterns in the information we’re constantly gathering. I don’t care whose name appears in the byline; the work is its own reward. As Batman said to Commissioner Gordon in “The Dark Knight,” “I’m whatever Gotham needs me to be.”
