The article nicely summarizes the 3 main drivers of happiness, which the article calls the "three prongs in a happiness trinity." These are: marriage (the most important), social connections ("social fitness" in the article), and money. We've researched how work impacts happiness. And the quick summary is the work happiness trinity is having work flexibility, autonomy and control. Work happiness rarely shows up in general happiness studies, but it clearly impacts overall happiness. More research needs to be done on this topic.

Mastering the Art of Saying "No" with Confidence and Elegance For professionals, the ability to say "no" effectively is crucial for fostering healthy boundaries and mutual respect. This skill is essential for enhancing professional relationships and personal well-being. The Hidden "Yes" in Every "No" Understanding that every "no" inherently defines a "yes" can be liberating. The challenge often lies in the fear of rejection, the potential to hurt others, or the anticipation of negative consequences, such as losing someone's favor. These fears are often projections rather than realities. The Illusion of Control Saying "yes" when you want to say "no" is a deceptive form of control. By falsely agreeing, you shape others' reactions while trapping yourself in fear. This behavior creates a hidden agreement based on deception, which can erode trust and intimacy over time. Strategies to Say "No" with Elegance Clarity in Your Desires: Be clear about what you want. A false "yes" often stems from uncertainty about your own needs. If saying "yes" violates your needs, it's crucial to stick to your truth. Negotiating Your Position: Use the word "because" to prequalify your decision. This powerful word helps bypass the critical factor of the mind and makes your decision more acceptable. For example: "I know how important this is to you, and I really would like to help, but I must decline because I have other commitments." "Thank you for entrusting me with this task. For now, I have to say no because my current time constraints won't allow me to do it properly." Examples of Saying "No" with Power Driving Requests: "I understand how important this is for you, and I care about your needs. However, I have my own appointments tomorrow that conflict with yours. Here are a few suggestions..." Advance Notifications: "I know you want to be informed in advance and I understand the importance of this. Unfortunately, my unpredictable job schedule limits my ability to promise anything beyond my current efforts." Handling Angry People Acknowledge their feelings to reduce aggression and open the door to productive conversation. For example: Punctuality Issues: "You seem really angry, and I understand that punctuality is important to you. While I can't promise to always be on time due to my job's unpredictability, we can work on creating more flexible arrangements." Reliability Concerns: "I understand the importance of delivering high-quality work. Due to my tight schedule, I can't promise to review all papers, but if you start earlier and give me more time, I can help with some of them." Conclusion By acknowledging others' feelings and using powerful words like "because," you can maintain control and respect in difficult situations without outright rejection. REWIRE YOUR BRAIN BY JOHN ARDEN. In his book "Rewire Your Brain: Think Your Way to a Better Life", Dr. John Arden, a renowned neuroscientist, shares powerful insights on how to optimize brain function and improve various aspects of life. The key ideas include: 🧠 Reprogramming the Brain The brain has the ability to form new neural connections and adapt throughout life (neuroplasticity). By focusing on possibilities rather than limitations, you can stimulate the formation of new neural pathways that enhance positive emotions. 🥗 Healthy Habits for an Efficient Brain Proper sleep, avoiding alcohol abuse, and limiting intake of simple carbohydrates are crucial for optimal brain function and memory. Practicing mindfulness, meditation, and prayer effectively activate the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to a calm mind and relaxed body. 🧩 Boosting Memory and Concentration Multitasking, such as constant web surfing and electronic messaging, negatively impacts memory and attention. How can radical thinking change the deep code of our society? Are we really going to create a viable and desirable Future for our civilization with “normal” people who adhere to the same dogmas, consider “Business as usual” as “normal” and will perform like hamsters in the system to continue “optimizing” the existing? What the world needs in the face of today's historical challenges is bold, even revolutionary thinking, capable of questioning in depth everything we've come to regard as “normal”: our intentions, our myths, our narratives. We don't need more softs skills to learn how to fit an obsolete system. We need deep skills to recognize and regenerate our deep code. We need everyone to allow themselves a living, regenerative and radical way of thinking - one that dares to go to the roots - in order to look at the world as it is AND as it COULD be, off the beaten track and out of preconceived notions. How did #work become central -the core of our #identity (the first thing we often ask each other is "What do you do?") - the focus of our #belonging, #purpose, #selfexpression, #authenticity, #values - some even refer to work as their #family There are a few causes and our #hustle culture is certainly a culprit, but I do think the fraying of our #socialfabric and connections, which started decades before the #pandemic and cannot be all blamed on #socialmedia. The question is, what do we do now? Should work be our center? If so, how do we build the other shrinking circles? I believe we can fix this across a few fronts, first by talking (and more importantly #listening) to each other. Be more #curious, be less #certain #belonging at work is wonderful, a strong #inclusive #culture is fantastic-- no doubt better work will be done when people feel an alignment to their #values, #selfexpression ,and desired #impact ...but I also think we need to fix these shrinking circles. As @nytdavidbrooks says we need more "weavers" to repair our fraying #connections What do you think? #futureofwork
