Who We Are

We’re an independent, nonprofit news service for Shasta County. We scout out the truth, for you.

We know you’ve lost trust in much of the media. We have too. That’s why we’re building something different at Shasta Scout.

🗞 We’re A Real News Organization: We hate to even have to say this but we know that anyone can open a news media organization or call themselves a journalist. As members of the Institute for Nonprofit News we’re required to maintain best practices in ethical and transparent journalism. We’re also a proud member of LION Publishers.

👩🏽‍💻 We’re A News Service: We’re more than just the news, we’re a news service that works to improve your daily life through accessible, in-depth information when and how you need it.

💵 We’re Free: We don’t charge for the news. We work for the people, not for profit, or power.

📰 We’re Independent: As a nonprofit, we’re funded by local readers, local businesses, foundations and major donors like Google News Innovations. We maintain a firewall between editorial decisions and funders to ensure that powerful sources of money won’t impact what we report or how we report it.

🔥 We’re Trustworthy: We publish factual news based on research, documents and interviews. We correct our mistakes quickly and transparently. We are careful to use powerful words in objectively accurate ways. We follow the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics.

🇺🇸  We Support Diversity: We’re here to serve the ethnically, culturally, socioeconomically and politically diverse people that make up Shasta County. We aim to reflect the same diversity in our staff, editorial choices and priorities.

🏞 We Practice Equity: In order to be part of repairing historical and societal inequities, we prioritize the stories and perspectives of under-represented people in ways that center their voices and enrich their communities.
