This position reports to the Lead IT Business Analyst (Data) within the Data Team of a leading energy trading firm.


The company is making significant investments in Data and Analytics to foster data-driven decision-making, risk management, and operational efficiency. As part of this initiative, the Data Team is developing a cutting-edge data platform utilizing Azure Databricks. The team is delivering new capabilities across the business, including:


  • A centralized warehouse for trade, valuation, and risk data.
  • A hub for sharing market fundamentals for commodity markets.
  • Pipelines for scraping, ingesting, and analyzing internal, public, and licensed data.
  • Processes and tools for data governance and discovery.
  • A reporting tool for EOD P&L Attribution.
  • Analytics and visualization tailored to business user needs.


The Data Team, based in Singapore, consists of:


  • A technical team responsible for integration, data engineering, software engineering, and release management, reporting to the Data Engineering Manager.
  • A business and data analysis team responsible for functional analysis, governance, and reporting/analytics, reporting to the Lead Business Analyst (Data).


As part of the Singapore team, the IT Business Analyst (Data) will serve the needs of users across all global locations, with responsibilities including:


3rd Line Support:

  • Assist users with questions and 3rd line support.
  • Capture issues and changes in the IT JIRA ticketing system.
  • Provide hands-on support for users in Data, Reporting, and Analysis.


Hands-on Support for Users:

  • Assist users in setting up and using the Data platform.
  • Perform hands-on work to support end-users and escalate to technical team members as needed.
  • Explain key datasets (e.g., data from ETRM systems).
  • Analyze data using tools like DataBricks, SQL, Python (Pandas, pySpark), and PowerQuery.
  • Help users set up and access data in Python, Excel, or PowerBI.
  • Create Power BI datasets and dashboards to visualize data.
  • Develop DataBricks Notebooks for data processing and visualization.
  • Deliver reports or analytics using source control and CI/CD pipelines.


Data Stewardship:

  • Build relationships with Data Owners in the business.
  • Coordinate and administer data governance processes.
  • Support role-based access control setup and administration.
  • Maintain data catalogs and document platform capabilities.
  • Assist users in finding data and using self-service data discovery tools.
  • Review data usage periodically and recommend changes.
  • Review access control periodically and suggest improvements.
  • Enhance data governance processes and tools over time.


Business Analysis for Small Changes and Projects:

  • Understand and prioritize user needs, creating prototypes and mock-ups as necessary.
  • Perform system or data analysis to define requirements.
  • Design and implement reports and solutions to meet requirements.
  • Document user requests and system changes in JIRA.
  • Collaborate with IT team members to break down, design, and estimate changes.
  • Act as Product Owner in agile delivery teams.
  • Perform testing and run UAT.
  • Support release planning and go-live.
  • Create user documentation and provide training.


The IT Business Analyst (Data) must proactively engage with users and team members in a collaborative and open manner, communicate effectively, and run meetings and workshops. They should be a self-starter, able to work independently, and handle tasks methodically and pragmatically.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a numerate subject or equivalent professional qualification.
  • 5 years' experience as an IT Business Analyst, Analyst Developer, or FO/MO Analyst in a trading house, investment bank, or tier-1 vendor/consultancy.
  • Experience in a Commodities Trading business and working with ETRM applications (e.g., Allegro, Endur, Aspect) and data (e.g., trade, operations, market data, valuation, and risk).
  • Proficiency with data, analysis, and BI tools (e.g., SQL, PowerQuery, Excel, Python, DataBricks, Snowflake, Power BI, Tableau).
