He became regular after his first experience with us at the social mentoring event. Not only did he become a regular mentor for our events and programs, but we also developed a pretty strong bond and friendship. I'm extremely thankful for that because good friends who truly care are hard to come by. He is one of them. Having transitioned mid-career from non-tech to tech, this message resonates a lot with me. A big obstacle, in my experience, is that senior hiring managers don't have the ability to assess the relevant skillsets. This is especially so for emerging technology areas. I've lost count of the number of times I've heard a CEO say they want to hire someone to lead digital transformation, and end up only shortlisting candidates with >15 years experience in IT. The other critical ingredient here is having measurable, goals-based success metrics. Identifying the skills you need to hire for is an incomplete picture if the hiring manager is unclear about the desired outcome. Again, this happens far too often.

RETURN TO BASICS After 17 years in a career that some would envy, I, as a Singaporean minority female leader, having climbed the ladder and accumulated the markers of 'success,' found myself confronting an unexpected reality—I was profoundly unhappy and unfulfilled, more importantly, I was no longer connected to myself. How could someone with a beautiful family, a successful career, financial stability, and professional industry respect feel such a void? The truth hit hard when I was skiing earlier this year with the wind was on my face (a feeling I associate with freedom). It reminded me of what my purpose was, and that in order to do so, I needed to journey back to the essentials of life, a path less about accumulating more accolades and titles and more about appreciating and generously giving back. This time of mind decluttering has taught me that: 💡 Simplicity Brings Clarity - In stripping back the unnecessary, I've found clarity. This is time I need to focus what genuinely enriches my life and discarding the rest. 🥰 Relationships are Riches - The most fulfilling moments now come from deepening relationships with family and friends, connecting with others in meaningful ways, and giving back to the community. ❤️ Passion Over Prestige - I've shifted my focus from roles that look impressive on a resume to personal projects that deeply ignite joy and passion. It’s purely about the impact and fulfillment the work brings. 🧘🏽‍♀️ Wellness is Wealth - Prioritizing my physical, mental, and emotional health over professional achievements has been a game changer. A well-balanced life is a truly fulfilling one. I am happier than I have been since Covid. I am fully present in every activity. This journey back to basics is mine towards a more meaningful existence. To anyone feeling the pangs of dissatisfaction despite outward success, consider this your invitation to explore what 'back to basics' could mean for you, and it does not have to be the extreme of leaving your job to find yourself. Top HR tech concerns CHROs in Singapore are addressing Having ambassadors, champions or cross-departmental taskforces will ensure all employees feel like they have a say in any change process – this is one of the best practices to enable a smoother transition into HR tech, as we learnt at a recent roundtable by HRO x Grab For Business. Report by Sarah Gideon.  The ways teams work, the tools employees use, and the expectations that top talent have are all constantly evolving. And no greater factor impacts these changes more than the utilisation of technology, which helps to equip employees to perform better, both quickly and efficiently.  At a breakfast roundtable held on 15 April 2024 (Monday), organised by Human Resources Online (HRO) in partnership with Grab For Business, 15 HR leaders sat together to discuss how technology comes into play in their talent management strategies, and how these have, ultimately, helped improve employee engagement. Setting the context for the conversation in her opening address, Chin Yin Ong, Chief People Officer, Grab, talked about understanding what a holistic and great employee experience entails.  At Grab, the leader and her team are looking to weave together what they call “the P-H-D of employee experience”:  👉 Physical, in terms of the office space: Infusing, for instance, wellbeing into the office space, acknowledging the impact a workspace can have on the employee; 👉 Human: Looking at the company’s policies, and how the leadership team engages its people, and 👉 Digital: Leveraging technology advancements to bring the employee experience forward. In addressing these, Ong noted, the aspiration is to be able to design work that allows employees to be more and more productive without having to work more and more hours. Recruitment Market Update: Mid-Q2 2024 for APAC and MENA APAC Region: Stability and Growth Market Overview: Post-Q1, stability and growth were evident in Asia. Q2 seems back to cautious ways. Strong hiring in PR and communications for us compared to last year. The digitech sector is gaining momentum, but slowly. Advertising and creative sectors remain flat. Market Sentiment: Businesses are more positive than in 2023 but still cautious. Upcoming elections in Singapore add to the uncertainty. Despite talks of recovery, the Chinese economy shows signs of stuttering. Recruitment Dynamics: Nervous markets mean cautious clients and slower hiring processes. Salaries are being debated and challenged more than usual. Active hiring is happening, but it’s not booming; jobs aren’t pouring in. To secure roles, build trust and leverage multiple tools to find clients with a growth mindset. Key Strategies for Us: Focus on building strong relationships. Produce relevant content and discuss market trends. Be a guide to clients and candidates, ensuring long-term success. Leverage our experience and resilience to navigate these conditions. MENA Region: Positive Yet Challenging Market Sentiment: The MENA market remains very positive, driven by government initiatives. Big projects are being announced across the GCC, particularly in Saudi. Dubai still has an influx of people coming in; anyone driving will tell you that. Abu Dhabi was very good to us in Q1. Much like APAC, for MENA most placements were in PR and communications, with Digitech improving. Advertising and creative sectors remain as last year. Recruitment Dynamics: The market is heavily client-driven. Competition for jobs is fierce, with regional experience winning the day in most cases. Increasing competition as more businesses open daily, driving down prices and squeezing margins for many. The region has a reputation for late payments, impacting cash flow for SMEs, which for us can delay hiring as clients are cautious about when they will get paid. A trend we continue to see is that hiring in Abu Dhabi, Qatar, and KSA is mostly for locals, with a limited supply of quality, experienced talent making it very candidate-driven in this area. KSA hiring is in high demand, but processes tend to be very lengthy. Key Strategies We Will Adopt: We launched in KSA and need to hire for that market. We understand and have been adapting our searches to local hiring preferences. We maintain a positive outlook and adapt to familiar challenges; this isn’t our first rodeo, so many of the market moves are those we have seen before. Continue to build strong relationships and stay resilient to navigate the tough aspects of recruiting in the region. Keep hosting events, producing content, and providing market intel. Thank you to MARKETECH APAC for the discussion on one of my favorite topics but also an extremely important industry trend that continues to gain momentum in SE Asia. I'm utterly convinced we will see commerce media networks grow far beyond the "Retail" industry but the term Retail Media Networks is the best name we have today to describe what's happening but look out for Financial Service Media Networks (Chase & PayPal) as well as other categories to emerge as more industries see the attraction to the strong & favorable unit economics advertising brings to their businesses. https://lnkd.in/gK2sK6XZ

We recently partnered with Kantar to release a new study on Retail Media Networks in SE Asia showing the RMN trend, while early days, is growing faster in SE Asia than global averages and is indeed a Full Funnel Omni-channel experience. 🌊The study by GrabAds and Kantar found that RMN ad spend is expected to surge by 73% in the next seven years, surpassing growth rates in search (47%) and social (45%). 🇮🇩 The study forecasts that Indonesia will lead the pack with a projected 13.41% CAGR in RMN ad spend, with 🇻🇳Vietnam and 🇹🇭Thailand rounding out the top three. 🙋🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️ The study noted that unlike the other RMN types that cover specific purchase stages, superapp RMNs can reach consumers at all stages of their buying journey, from awareness to purchase.
