Payment Facilitators (payfacs) like Stripe and Airwallex in SEA play a critical and often misunderstood role in the internet and fintech ecosystem. SGX needs “a flush of liquidity”, says Loke Wai San, the chairman of chip-tester AEM Holdings who famously led the company from its low share price of 7 cents to more than $5. As a co-founder of local private equity firm Novo Tellus, Loke helped AEM build up a strong institutional following, including securing Temasek as its single-largest investor with a stake of 12.5%. Loke is also known for launching one of the three spacs, known as blank-cheque listings, on SGX, although the potential of this would be unfulfilled as global market interest began to wane by the time the necessary processes were completed and SGX welcomed the three spacs. While he recognises that launching the spac was a form of risk-taking on his end, he adds that the capital market has to be welcome of risks, especially if investors desire something innovative with high equity.
