At the core of Singtel Touching Lives Fund (STLF) lies a crucial mission: To empower our beneficiary SPED students, enabling them to acquire essential skills, progress towards higher learning, and lead independent lives. Over the past two decades, STLF has raised more than $57 million through the unwavering support of our company, partners, and staff, benefiting nearly 1,800 children with special needs annually. Last year, we commemorated the 20th anniversary of STLF. To mark the occasion, Singtel partnered with Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) to conduct a comprehensive study, quantifying the impact of STLF on our six beneficiary Singapore Special Education (SPED) schools. Through this study, it was encouraging to see the social impact generated by the initiative – with over 63% of SPED teachers recognising the tangible benefits brought about by STLF, and 67% of SPED parents and caregivers attesting to the enrichment of their children's self-confidence and relationship-building skills. As we reflect on STLF and its 20-year journey, we are humbled and encouraged that it's making a meaningful difference and contributing to a more inclusive and empowered future for Singapore. In 2019, #Singapore was among the world’s first to articulate #AI governance principles through the publication of the Model AI Governance Framework (MGF)1, updated in 2020, to promote the responsible use of Traditional AI. The advent of Generative AI has reinforced existing risks and introduced new ones. In January 2024, AI Verify Foundation and IMDA extended the work done for Traditional AI and proposed the first comprehensive framework for Generative AI governance, pulling together different strands of global conversation. The Proposed Model AI Governance Framework for Generative AI (MGF-Gen AI) was announced at Davos by Minister for Communications and Information for international views.

Who better to steer the conversation on Aligning Skills to the New Future of Work in the Era of AI and Beyond than AICB Council Member and Independent Non-Executive Chairman of Standard Chartered Bank Datuk Yvonne Chia, FCB, with her vast experience in banking spanning over three decades. Capturing the audience’s attention from the get-go, she opened the discussion with a probing question on the significant gaps in Malaysia’s educational curricula when it comes to the skills needed for an AI-driven future, and how educational institutions bridge these gaps with the help of the private sector and the government. Speaking on the impact of different use cases of GenAI on business functions across industries, Prof. Shien Jin Ong, PhD, Professor of Practice at the Asia School of Business emphasised that GenAI is clearly being deployed across all industries, and despite the fears of many that they will be replaced by AI, it isn’t that jobs will be replaced by AI, but the fact that those who do not employ AI in their work will be replaced by those who do. Sharing that Malaysia ranked 8 out of 12 APAC economies in terms of AI readiness, having scored highly in operating environment and infrastructure but not so much on talent and R&D, Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp) CEO Thomas Mathew highlighted the need for a comprehensive and sustainable action plan for talent development in Malaysia, focusing on data-driven decision-making, industry-driven skills requirements, industry–academia partnerships and collaborations, and the transfer of knowledge / skills / technology via high-technology industries. Jacqueline Ong, Executive Director, The EQ Edge Group highlighted the importance of human-machine partnerships, exploring augmented functioning to create value. To gain the full benefits of technologically augmented working, employees will be required to hone their skill sets, particularly around critical thinking and judgment, decision making and creativity. They will also need the skills to interpret and apply the insights generated by AI and data analytics in the most productive, effective ways. Also in the panel is Datuk (Dr) Nora A Manaf, CB, Chairman, Human Resource Networking Group; Group Chief Human Capital Officer, Maybank and Kevin Lam, AICB Council Member; Group Managing Director / Chief Executive Officer, Hong Leong Bank Berhad, who shared their views on the key soft skills that will become increasingly important as AI assumes the more technical tasks, strategies to reskill and upskill the workforce in light of AI advancements, the major challenges for Malaysia in closing the skills gap in an AI-driven job market, and the importance of fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptability among employees amidst rapid technological changes.

Singapore appears to be once again leading the way in regulatory technology, this time in building quantum and AI capabilities in financial services. The Monetary Authority of Singapore is providing $74.5 million to support innovation and adoption in financial services. The country has a National Quantum Office with a formal strategy to build quantum capabilities in Singapore. There is a need across the world to enhance cyber security readiness to better prepare our financial infrastructure and services for the quantum era. Regulators across the world are collaborating on a WEF-led project, but how many countries are offering financial support?

This survey reflects a pragmatic Singaporean mindset that values independence and importance of government support in crucial areas, particularly healthcare. Although a 2000 sampling might be a little low, it is indicative of my personal perspectives from this article. The preference for reallocating public funds rather than increasing taxes indicates a some realisation that over reaching expectations of support comes at a price to citizens in the form of much higher taxation likended to many countries with high societal supports. I would like to see what is there for education as that is something I feel is still quite lacking. I recently attempted to utilise my #SkillsFuture mid career allocation we recently received and the professional courses from #NTU were not entitled for such claims , looking through what was and I was surprised to see things like cooking and baking. Wondering what is the deciding factor for NTU professional courses vs baking. It is a timely study into the sentiments of Singaporeans and PR for aligning policies to our needs to balance out what we should be self dependent on vs what we expect from our government. Looking forward to how Lawrence Wong will lead us during his term as our Prime Minister.

At MWC Shanghai 2024, I had the pleasure of interviewing Anna Yip, Deputy CEO for Singapore Consumer and CEO of Business Development at Singtel, on the company's innovative use of AI and 5G technology. Anna shared how Singtel is leveraging AI to transform customer service, by implementing a system that summarises, synthesises, and highlights key customer issues. This not only empowers their agents to deliver faster, more personalised support but also makes the job more engaging and rewarding for employees. Singtel is also harnessing AI to revolutionise marketing communications, enabling the development and testing of campaigns at a faster pace. As a pioneer in 5G, Singtel was one of the first operators to deploy a standalone 5G network. Anna highlighted how this technology is already being used to transform industries such as auto making, chipmaking, and logistics, with the promise of much more innovation to come. The conversation highlighted Singtel's commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to improve customer experience and drive innovation in the telecommunications industry. I was particularly impressed by their focus on using AI not just for efficiency but also to enhance the quality of jobs for their employees. At the Microsoft CEO Connection event in KL yesterday I had the privilege of asking Satya Nadella his view on #softskills in the world of #Ai and if they’re the real HARDSKILLS. Satya immediately reinforced how important soft skills are, how difficult they can be to develop, and singled out #curiosity and #empathy as being especially vital.  “It’s fantastic that you are thinking about this” he said on hearing what we do at Hardskills. #singapore #startup This issue is clearly top of the agenda in the C-suite, three separate CEO conversations over lunch at the event started with a comment about the validity of the question. CEOs globally are recognizing that new approaches are needed to train #behavioural #skills and mindsets that STICK to take advantage of the historic technological shift of AI. Satya noted that all businesses will have to rapidly adapt to this paradigm shift, including his own as the nature of what’s needed from software teams is changing rapidly. Oracle has announced a plan to train up to 10,000 students and professionals in artificial intelligence over the next three years in Singapore. Among the initiatives is the offer of 300 internships and apprenticeships to polytechnic students, who will have an opportunity for employment within Oracle or its partners post-training. From my perspective, this initiative will be beneficial for both Singapore and Oracle. Launching education initiatives can have several strategic advantages, both internally for operations and externally for market and community impact. Let's delve deeper into why I believe this. 1) These initiatives can serve as a direct pipeline for recruiting top talent. Participants who have completed Oracle's training programs are more likely to be considered for recruitment, already knowing the company's culture and processes. 2) They will improve their CSR profile by contributing to education, enhancing public perception, and increasing brand loyalty among consumers. 3) They are also expanding their user base by educating potential users on their technologies. For example, Oracle training individuals on its specific platforms or tools increases the likelihood that these tools will be adopted. 4) Education initiatives can strengthen the ecosystems around their products or services by increasing the number of people who can use or support their technology. 5) Companies that are actively involved in education may have a greater voice in policy discussions related to technology and education. This could potentially influence regulations that affect their business. 6) In industries with stringent regulation, investing in societal goods like education can generate goodwill with regulatory bodies. In conclusion, Oracle's educational initiatives in Singapore represent a forward-thinking strategy that supports its business goals while contributing positively to the broader tech landscape. As Oracle continues to expand its influence in cloud computing and AI, its commitment to education and community engagement will likely serve as a cornerstone of its ongoing success and influence in the tech industry. Singapore is no stranger to exceptional governance. For decades, the Lee family has been synonymous with principled leadership in this nation. But now, the leadership has been passed to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong—a momentous shift, yet deeply rooted in a tradition of unwavering and unchanging values. Why does this specific leadership change stand out to me? It's the values. One of the best things about Singapore is the absolutely immaculate governance. And the country possesses values on how to govern and, whether right or wrong, is consistent with its values. I think one of the things that is a hallmark of this transfer of values, the consistency with which this baton has been passed. Here are six key principles that remain our guiding stars: 1.⁠ ⁠Meritocracy: In Singapore, all children have the right to a formal education. Every Singaporean now has the opportunity to climb the social ladder, where their abilities—rather than their religion, race or origin—are what determine their success. 2.⁠ ⁠Racial and religious harmony: In Singapore, the freedom of speech and the press are seen as secondary to racial and religious peace. Any kind of discrimination against any religion is forbidden by the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act. Building a multiethnic community like Singapore, where different religions are practiced, depends on this. 3.⁠ ⁠A clean government: Singapore has implemented a zero-tolerance policy aimed at eradicating corruption from its civil service and government. 4.⁠ ⁠Rule of law: A World Bank analysis indicates that the most important element affecting a nation's development is its legal system. Because Singapore has a strong legal system built on solid governance, everyone is treated equally and fairly there. Businesspeople and investors can feel more confident knowing that their money is in a secure environment thanks to this. 5.⁠ ⁠Inclusiveness: Social justice is important to Singapore's growth plan. All of its people receive government subsidies for public transportation, housing, healthcare, and education, even though it does not want to be known as a welfare state. Singapore's social-economic structure is based on a special fusion of socialist and capitalist principles. 6.⁠ ⁠Care for the environment: Singapore’s commitment to protecting the environment remains vigilant and strong as ever as showcased within their policies. The beauty of this leadership transition lies not just in the change but in the consistency of these values. It's not just about a new face; it’s about the same unwavering ethos that ensures Singapore remains a beacon of governance. What can we learn? True leadership is not about an individual; it's about enduring values. It's about building on a legacy while paving the way for future generations.
