“Our customer was initially defensive and refused to listen when we advised against making a funds transfer to an unknown account,” recounts Michael Chan Hiang Leng, Deputy Branch Manager (right in photo). “In the beginning of May, a 64-year-old customer requested to make a funds transfer of S$85,000 to a personal account for an investment. When Owen (left in photo) enquired about the account payee’s name, the customer became defensive, despite not knowing the answer, and insisted on proceeding with the transaction as he had a deadline to meet. Concerned that he might be a potential scam victim, Owen referred the case to our Assistant Branch Manager (ABM), Kai Yu (middle in photo), for further investigation.” “Kai Yu approached the customer tactfully, reassuring him that their intention was to protect him from falling prey to investment scams. Feeling a sense of security, the customer opened up and revealed that he had been investing in Ethereum coin through an app called “SavePal”, where he would borrow money from the app itself which has snowballed to S$85,000. He also shared that he has previously given a copy of his NRIC to the account payee, and was worried that his family would face repercussions if the payment wasn’t made on time.” “Kai Yu alerted me of the situation, and we felt that it was an odd request to transfer the money to a personal account when the customer could have made the crediting to the platform itself. I then contacted our Fraud Team who confirmed that we should not perform the funds transfer to an unknown account, and informed the customer to lodge a police report immediately.” “Through our timely intervention, the customer realised he could have been a potential scam victim and expressed gratitude to my team for our vigilance in preventing him from losing money.” “Having hard conversations with customers can be daunting, but I’m glad that our Speak Up culture has provided an environment where my team is encouraged to raise issues and probe our customers further to ensure that their assets are safeguarded.” Falling prey to scams can be a distressing experience. This is why your banking security remains our top priority. You can call our dedicated 24/7 Fraud Hotline at (+65) 6255 0160 to assist you with potential fraud cases on a priority basis. You can also give your savings an added layer of security with our UOB LockAway Account and transfer in money to keep it locked away from digital scams. — We are proud of our colleagues like Owen, Kai Yu and Michael who demonstrated our UOB values to do #RightByYou. The commitment they have shown to make our customers' experience with UOB safe and comfortable is truly inspiring. 📷: [From right to left] Great effort from the team at UOB Jurong Point Branch: Owen Aw, Personal Wealth Manager, Chong Kai Yu, ABM, and Michael Chan Hiang Leng, Deputy Branch Manager. #LifeAtUOB #ScamPreventionStories

To celebrate our culture of appreciation at UOB, we kicked off the fifth year of the UOB Global Appreciation Month – themed “Appreciating you The UOB Way”. This was a global hybrid event led by our Deputy Chairman and CEO, Wee Ee Cheong and attended by more than 8,000 colleagues from around the world. Our CEO thanked all colleagues for their hard work and emphasised that culture is of the utmost importance. He said that it is vital to have an attitude of gratitude and it goes a long way to unite us, foster a sense of belonging and build employee pride. We are certainly taking his advice to heart with different appreciation activities happening globally this month. In Singapore, we went to five office locations this Tuesday for our ‘Espresso your Appreciation’ activity, where colleagues were treated to a cup of coffee or bubble tea. Whether it is receiving a drink or being treated to a meal or kind words of appreciation, we hope that everyone at UOB enjoys our Appreciation Month in July to the fullest!
