The Youth Corps Singapore recently held their 3-day Leaders Programme for a cohort of about 60 Public Service Commission (PSC) scholars. Ms Joyce Wong, SPD’s director for CEO Office and Centralised Services, was invited as a Resource Specialist to speak about the different social needs in our community.   Ms Wong’s sharing focused on helping the scholars and future civil servants understand how they can play a role in making Singapore an inclusive society. Using the social model of disability, participants learnt about the 3 broad categories of barriers faced by persons with disability in the environment, attitudes and organisations, along with examples about how some of these barriers were successfully resolved or not been fully addressed. The concept of Universal Design was also introduced as an approach to the design of environment, products and services for Singaporeans.    We are thankful for the opportunity to share our views with these future leaders, and look forward to more collaborations in the future. Ramps and barrier-free routes are important for mobility aid users to reach their destinations safely. SPD Artisan Collab apprentice Gee Beng shows us a typical day’s journey passing by Block 80 Chay Yan Street to get to Tiong Bahru Market, and the difference in her travelling experience when the route is barrier-free. Simple gestures to maintaining an accessible route, such as utilising proper parking areas or removing obstacles, will not only benefit mobility aid users, but also elderly persons with mobility challenges or parents with prams. We hope that, be it at Tiong Bahru or anywhere else in Singapore, we can all be gracious and continue to keep a lookout for one another 🥰 #tiongbahru #barrierfree #accessibility #graciousness #inclusion #spd60a #celebratingyesterdayimaginingtomorrow #spdsingapore

SPD’s CEO Mr Abhimanyau Pal participated in the 17th Conference of States Parties (COSP) to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) at the United Nations that was held in New York from 11 to 13 June 2024, together with the Singapore delegation led by Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Social and Family Development Mr Eric Chua. Singapore participates in the CRPD COSP to share its efforts in disability inclusion with the international community and to learn from others. The COSP sessions covered crucial topics such as inclusive employment, assistive technology, and community living – areas that are central to SPD’s mission. There, we got to connect and collaborate with like-minded leaders and agencies worldwide. This is one of many milestones for SPD, reflecting 60 years of dedicated service to people with disabilities and those who may develop disabling conditions. We are grateful for the opportunity and look forward to creating more impact in the years to come. #InclusiveSG #COSP17 #EMP2030 #spd60a #celebratingyesterdayimaginingtomorrow #spdsingapore

When Joanne's domestic helper needed to go on 2 weeks of home leave last year, she felt anxious as it meant her caregiving duties would increase and balancing it with her full-time job would be challenging. This is because Joanne’s 20-year-old daughter Kim Kit has global developmental delay and is unable to perform basic care activities independently, such as toileting and showering, therefore requiring the assistance of the helper. Joanne found respite in the form of the Take-A-Break (TAB) programme. In the 2 weeks that her helper was on home leave, a care professional provided interim assistance while Joanne was at work. The care professional assisted in showering Kim Kit, feeding her during mealtimes, as well as playing and being a friend. Not only does Joanne have one more person who understands her role and ability as a caregiver, Kim Kit was able to spend time with someone outside of her family and whom she is unfamiliar with. Joanne is also thankful that the TAB services were fully subsidised, which did not add to her financial burden of fees for Kim Kit's school, therapy sessions and helper. SPD was reappointed by SG Enable to administer the enhanced run of the TAB programme, which provides planned short-term home-based respite options for caregivers of persons with disabilities when they need temporary relief from their caregiving duties. Find out more or request for assistance via https://lnkd.in/g-BcSee8 today. #takeabreak #spd60a #celebratingyesterdayimaginingtomorrow #spdsingapore
