“I AM A TEDxYOUTH SPEAKER?!” Time flies. It has already been half a year since I did my TEDxYouth @ Ngee Ann Polytechnic! Honoured to have spoken alongside Mr John Cheng, Ms Shazza, Mr Andrew Ong and Ms Sonia Chew! Thank you to Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Sandbox Advocates for organising this inspirational TEDxYouth and also, Mr Brian Chua for pushing me out of my comfort zone! This January, I was privileged to be invited by Ngee Ann Polytechnic to deliver a TEDxYouth speech about my volunteering journey with the Singapore Red Cross. Thanks to the cadets, instructors, and officers I have met along the way, this 7 years journey has been nothing but amazing! In my speech, I highlighted on the ups and downs I have faced in my volunteering journey. One of the downs I recalled was when I had just started my volunteering and my polytechnic journey at about the same time. Like my peers said in the past, “Polytechnic is easy,” and I naively believed them and solely focusing on my volunteering journey, not my studies. As a result, I did not do very well in my first polytechnic semester. But hold your horses; volunteering actively doesn’t mean that your academic results will be bad. I was resolute to make a change in my own academic journey and my grades subsequently improved over the next few semesters while juggling between volunteering, family and life outside school. Happy to say, I am now a proud undergraduate at the Singapore Institute of Technology and still an active volunteer! What kept me going as a volunteer in the Singapore Red Cross were the lives I have impacted in the events that I have gone for, and it makes me very proud, like a big brother, when I see my juniors/cadets growing and prospering in their way. One vivid example was in the National Day Parade 2023 when I recalled that my contingent cadets started quietly, shy and unwilling to step out and lead their peers. As we go along weekly, training by training, every one of them has grown to become active and patriotic Red Cross Youth cadet leaders, leading in their way within just 5 months of togetherness. I believe that volunteering can make a huge impact on someone’s life, and we can make an effort to spend some time contributing greatly to the society that has given us so much. If we were to aim to have a volunteer in every home (like how we aim to have a first aider in every home), I am confident that Singapore would be a much better place to live! Let’s start volunteering as we mark 2024 as the Year of Celebrating Volunteers! Let’s make our society and community a better place to stay in by serving one another and remembering that humanity is in our hands to make a difference. Do join the Singapore Red Cross as a volunteer!
