This post is extremely belated as we are involved in a heavygoing trial – but we wanted to share some updates from our trip to the SCMA Indonesia Conference, co-organised by Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA), the Indonesian Ship Owners Association, and Anggraeni and Partners. The Conference dealt mainly with issues relating to arbitrations and we were so glad to participate in what was a lively discussion about real issues in arbitration at the Conference. The first Panel was moderated by Jonathan Muk, with the panellists being Kimarie Cheang of Watson Farley & Williams, Thian Seng Oon of Oon & Bazul LLP, and Jonathan Tan of Helmsman LLC - Advocates & Solicitors. We had an extended discussion about the considerations involved in selecting arbitrators, especially on the importance of having an arbitrator who is culturally attuned to the business norms of an appointing party – because of the importance of having the facts interpreted in the right manner. We also had discussions about interim measures that can be deployed to assist in a matter involving arbitration. Our Haireez Jufferie was a panellist on the second Panel with Ian Teo of Helmsman LLC - Advocates & Solicitors, Prakaash Silvam of Oon & Bazul LLP, moderated by Elizabeth Fong of Watson Farley & Williams. The Panel which discussed the development of an arbitration from inception to the end. There was quite significant discussion on the issue of arbitration clauses – and how it is so critical to have a properly drafted arbitration clauses – which if not looked into, could cause intractable difficulties subsequently, especially if reference can be made to another subsisting entity that is not the arbitral institution. Thank you to all who came and participated. It is always a pleasure to meet with old and new friends, and have meaningful conversation all at the same time. Till next time! #SCMA #Indonesia #arbitration

It is always exciting for us to travel and have conversations with like-minded professionals in the shipping and commodities world! Coming this June, Haireez Jufferie and Jonathan Muk will be travelling to Indonesia for the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA)'s Indonesia Conference 2024, organised together with the Indonesian National Shipowners' Association. Haireez will be a panellist on resolving maritime disputes via arbitration, while Jonathan will be a moderator on the panel about selecting arbitrators and interim relief in arbitration. Since many maritime disputes are resolved by arbitration, we hope the sessions will be useful. If you are in Jakarta and find this session relevant to your area of work, we hope that you'll join us for the Conference. Also a shoutout to our friends Jonathan Tan from Helmsman LLC - Advocates & Solicitors, Kimarie Cheang from Watson Farley & Williams, Thian Seng Oon from Oon & Bazul LLP, Ian Teo from Helmsman LLC - Advocates & Solicitors, Prakaash Silvam from Oon & Bazul LLP, and Elizabeth Fong from Watson Farley & Williams who will be there with us - let's make it a great conference together! #lvmlc #shipping #commodities #arbitration

Its Friday and the end of the week! Its also been awhile since we last posted on our LinkedIn page. We're excited and glad to share that LVM Law Chambers did amazing in the most recent Benchmark Litigation Asia Pacific rankings! We have been: - Shortlisted for Singapore Firm of the Year, and Shipping Firm of the Year - Ranked Tier 2 for Commercial and Transactions, Tier 3 for Construction, International Arbitration, and Shipping, and Recommended for White Collar Crime - Our Vi Ming Lok SC, Joseph Lee, Haireez Jufferie, Jonathan Muk, and Joanne Ooi Huey Hien have been ranked as Litigation Stars and Future Stars in multiple areas of law. - Clara Tay and Xiao Wei Wong had special client feedback for them. What is tremendously encouraging though are the comments from our clients which reaffirm that we are on the right track. We showcase just two: "They are exceptional at understanding the crux of the dispute and running the entire case on their own. As a client, it is very important that the counsel understands the client’s point of view and then works on the case in the best interest of the client. We are stunned by the dedication and hard work that each member of the firm brings into our case." “Efficient, good legal writing, well-thought-out submissions and sound legal principles. Overall, excellent end-product!” We couldn't have done it without the support of our friends and colleagues, so thank you very much for all the support shown! #lvmlc #benchmarklitigation #law

We live in a multicultural society. And at our firm, we have colleagues who come from different cultures. Therefore, when we knew that one of our colleagues was going to be celebrating Hari Raya Puasa and was therefore fasting in the month of Ramadan, some of us decided to organise an evening to break fast with our colleague. Some of us even decided to try and fast with our colleague, just to experience what fasting without food and water was like. Feedback - it wasn't so easy. Some of us gave up. Whatever it was, we ordered nasi ambeng and waited till the sun set to tuck in. For some of us, it was the first time trying nasi ambeng as well - if you have not had it before, please do give it a try! Here are pictures of us celebrating around our pantry. To all our Muslim friends, selamat berpuasa! Ivan Khoo, Haireez Jufferie, Ying Xuan Thong, Kah-Wai Tan (陈嘉炜), Jiabao Li, Clara Tay, Clara Lim, Benjamin Ow, Jonathan Muk #lvmlc #ramadan

We are in an extremely busy season at the firm right now, with matters ramping up and timelines in Court looming. Nevertheless, it is always fun to take time out to speak to students and that's exactly what our colleagues Joseph Lee, Waltan Pak, and Jonathan Muk did last Thursday with a class of students from the Singapore Management University. The students were taking a course on Transformative Leadership and our session was supposed to be a sharing on the challenges of management. While we don't claim to be transformative leaders in any sense of the word, we are glad to be able to offer our perspective and 2 cents worth on how the firm was started, why choose to start a firm (the other option is to stay at a big firm and rise through the ranks), what are the daily challenges of running a firm, and the list goes on. We really enjoyed the discussion - the questions asked were curious and candid, and the sharing was authentic. Thank you to Paul Lim for reaching out and setting up the session! We hope that your students enjoyed the session, the snacks, and the interior design of the firm! #lvmlc #smu

Our Firm has traditionally been active in the China market and representing several large Chinese companies, both state-owned and private.   In this connection, it was our pleasure hosting a coffee chat with delegates from the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (“CIETAC”) at our offices.   During the session, our Managing Director Mr Vi Ming Lok SC and Asia & China Practice Director Mr Ge Huangbin had a pleasant and meaningful discussion with the Vice Chairman & Secretary General of CIETAC, Mr Wang Chengjie, and the Deputy Secretary-General of CIETAC Hong Kong, Mr Wang Haocheng, about arbitration developments in China. Thank you for visiting our offices – it was a pleasure and an honour!
