For all #projectfunders and #climatecommitted buyers: IMPERATIVE is now launching our #cleancooking project in #Nepal. At IMPERATIVE we fundamentally believe in the need for clean cooking projects from both a climate and sustainable development perspective. There have been a number of significant criticisms leveled at cookstove carbon projects in recent years. In developing this project in Nepal, we have deliberately set out to systematically address/mitigate the risks underlying these criticisms and to create a new high-quality benchmark for improved biomass cookstove projects. If you are a project funder and/or a carbon credit buyer and are interested in supporting real, verifiable, high-quality climate and sustainable development action, please reach out. #climateaction #highqualitycarbon
About us
Imperative’s mission is to design, develop, own, and operate, at scale, the best carbon credit and environmental asset projects in the world and to optimize those projects using technology. The company is committed to driving a Just Climate Transition by addressing overlooked communities in emerging markets and Least Developed Countries (LDC). We believe that environmental markets have become increasingly fundamental to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. In order to deliver on the potential of these markets, large-scale, high-quality project development capabilities will be critical. Imperative aims to deliver projects of sector-defining quality with maximum sustainable development and biodiversity co-benefits.

IMPERATIVE is proud to announce the receipt of our first ex ante carbon rating from BeZero Carbon. The first 10,000 hectare phase of Imperative’s recently sanctioned South African project, which at full scale will restore 100,000 hectares of land through active replanting of native thicket across a vast area in the Eastern and Western Capes of South Africa, has received an ex ante Standalone Carbon Rating of 'aa' and a BeZero Carbon ex ante Rating of 'Ae'. This ex ante rating puts Imperative’s Spekboom project amongst the highest rated Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetation projects for which BeZero have issued ex ante ratings. This very strong rating serves as a significant external validation and endorsement of Imperative’s commitment to top-decile quality in our carbon credit projects. As execution progresses on the project, we aim to further increase the project’s rating. Read the full release here: https://lnkd.in/g6ZRkvZC #climateaction #voluntarycarbonmarkets

We are excited to announce that IMPERATIVE has taken a final investment decision (FID) and commenced execution on Phase 1 of our large-scale native species ecosystem restoration project in South Africa. Phase 1 of the project will restore 10,000 hectares of the native thicket biome, and at full scale the project will restore 100,000 hectares and remove more than 30 million tons of CO2e from the atmosphere. We are very grateful to the dedicated and professional teams at Mirova, GenZero and Rubicon Carbon for the hard work and collaboration to get this project to FID. Thank you in particular to Charlotte Lehmann, Lucie Bonnieux, Olympe Durrleman, Ling Min Hoon, Rui Huang and Christopher Brown. https://lnkd.in/gBFuXe9S

Next week, Scobie Mackay, Arnaud Dore and Vahid Jahangiri will be participating in the International Energy Agency (IEA)'s Global Leaders' Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa. The Summit brings together global leaders from government, the private sector and civil society to discuss how to progress the critical issue of access to clean cooking in Africa. High-quality carbon credits, the #voluntarycarbonmarket and the #article6 Paris Agreement markets, have a pivotal role to play in making access to clean cooking a reality for millions in Africa. Imperative is focused on delivering high-quality improved cookstove projects in least-advantaged communities in the Global South alongside our large-scale #naturebasedsolutions projects. We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Summit and to contribute private sector perspectives on how #carbonmarkets can be used to drive clean cooking outcomes. Please reach out if you would like to connect. https://lnkd.in/gn8eEaT7

IMPERATIVE is very happy to announce the launch, with Freepoint Commodities, of another innovative, early-stage project funding facility. This facility adds to the solutions that IMPERATIVE and its partners are putting in place to address the funding gap for early-stage #voluntarycarbonmarket projects, particularly in the Global South. This second facility, which is a sister facility to the one recently announce with CrossBoundary Group, will further enable IMPERATIVE to accelerate its portfolio of high-quality, next-gen carbon credit projects. Thank you to Andrew Hallett and the team at Freepoint Commodities for the work in getting this in place. We are excited to continue building together! https://lnkd.in/g3T2PtBN

IMPERATIVE and CrossBoundary Group's Fund for Nature have launched a new facility for the financing of early-stage carbon project development activities. The Facility is designed to catalyze investable, large-scale nature-based carbon projects in critical ecosystems across emerging markets including in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Amazon. The first project funded under the Facility is a large-scale reforestation and revegetation project in Sub-Saharan Africa covering up to 100,000 hectares of badly degraded land. The parties expect to fund further early-stage projects under the Facility this year, and it is anticipated that the Facility will help to catalyze projects in Imperative’s pipeline with sequestration potential in excess of 50 million tones of CO2 equivalent, creating thousands of local in-country jobs and flowing millions of dollars to communities in the Global South. Without financing for critical early-stage activities, many projects never make it to market. This is particularly true in underserved markets, where early-stage project risk is compounded by real or perceived country risk considerations. Early-stage funding is critical for scaling the pipeline of institutional-grade nature-based carbon projects. Thank you to Kate Wharton, Sebastian Deschler and the great team at CrossBoundary Group for the collaboration and commitment to action. There has been a lot of noise surrounding the Science Based Targets initiative announcement this week on the use of carbon credits. Much of this opposition seems to be rooted in the idea that the use of carbon credits somehow inherently involves or invites greenwashing. This, of course, is nonsense. Multiple recent studies (links in the comments) have shown that companies that are using carbon credits tend to have more ambitious climate targets and are directly decarbonizing their own supply chains at nearly twice the rate of companies that are not involved in the Voluntary Carbon Market. When executed well, carbon credits finance activities and projects that are essential for achieving our collective climate goals and averting a climate catastrophe. The stark and frightening reality that we need to be focused on is the chart below - greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase year after year. We must change gear - we cannot let ideological positions on markets get in the way of ACTION! We need to leverage every tool at our disposal and to do it quickly and decisively. IMPERATIVE supports and applauds the decision of the Science Based Targets initiative Board of Trustees. Not as a project developer, but as a committed actor in the fight against climate change. #climateaction
