  • 💡 Check out the latest article in GFI’s Scale-Up Series, illuminating two major ways alternative protein startups can achieve scale and price parity. Challenges: Newcomers have to battle stiff competition, develop marketing and brand recognition, understand consumer needs, comply with regulations, and the list goes on. So what can companies do? 💪 1️⃣ Identify markets you can win at every stage of your business Start by targeting smaller, niche markets where consumers will pay more, and expand from there, leveraging product advantages and exploring diverse applications to build a sustainable path to scale. Example: Oatly gained traction by partnering with artisanal coffee shops before expanding to retail. 🙌 2️⃣ Dare to pivot For the alternative protein industry to succeed, products must be affordable; companies should focus on reducing costs and be prepared to pivot if necessary. Example: TurtleTree pivoted from cultivated milk to high-value lactoferrin, setting a foundation for future growth. 🙌 Deep dive: https://lnkd.in/d6HQPjP8 The first article in this series, which focused on four guiding principles for alternative protein startups looking to scale, can be accessed here: https://lnkd.in/eYGf2jUF The Good Food Institute Good Food Institute Europe Carlotte Lucas

🇰🇷 GFI APAC had the pleasure of hosting a delegation from South Korea, including senior officials from Gyeongbuk Techno Park, Gyeongbuk Provincial Government, and Uiseong County, alongside DaNAgreen CTO Jay Hyeongun Jee. 💡 Our knowledge-sharing session explored the latest developments in APAC's cultivated meat landscape across science and technology, consumer engagement, and policy. The delegation was particularly interested in Singapore's pioneering cultivated meat ecosystem. We discussed how South Korea can leverage its innovation potential to scale cultivated meat manufacturing, especially with the new regulation-free zone in Uiseong. 📈 The Korean delegation shared their ambitious plans for the "Bio Valley Industrial Complex" in the regulation-free zone, featuring a groundbreaking cell bank, contract development manufacturing facility, and cellular agriculture support centre. This initiative aims to identify and reform regulations based on scientific progress. 🚀 We're excited about the future and look forward to continued collaboration as South Korea drives forward in the cultivated meat industry. 🤝

⚖️ What’s going on in the alt protein policy space right now? The Good Food Institute's State of Global Policy Report provides readers with expert insights to address that question from several nuanced angles, but the truest answer may also be the shortest: “a lot.” 🔍 In 2023: 🇦🇺 🇳🇿 Vow became the first cultivated meat company to apply for regulatory approval in Australia and New Zealand. Food Standards Australia New Zealand completed its scientific risk assessment of Vow’s application and conducted the first of two rounds of public consultation. 🇸🇬 The Singapore Food Agency approved use of serum-free media to produce GOOD Meat's products. 🇯🇵 Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries announced a “Vision of Promoting Food-tech” with an associated roadmap that includes cultivated food products. This announcement builds on a 2022 announcement signaling Japan’s intent to study regulatory pathways for cultivated meat. 🇰🇷 Ministry of Food and Drug Safety of Republic of Korea published Alternative Foods Labelling Guidelines for plant-based products. Dive deep into the developments in APAC, the public funding scenario, and the road forward in 2024: https://lnkd.in/dqQ3ab-E 📺 Or watch APAC Policy Specialist Ankur Chaudhary walk through key takeaways in this webinar recording: https://lnkd.in/eE6y3VfJ Japanese- and Korean-language summaries of this report are also available 🇯🇵 https://lnkd.in/e24nwG6y 🇰🇷 https://lnkd.in/eusXpVxy Michael Carter Sam Lawrence APAC Society for Cellular Agriculture Samuel Goh
