21 Bay Area Restaurants and Bars That Closed in June

June 26

MISSION — Salvadoran and Mexican restaurant Los Amigos closed after five years, Mission Local reports. Located at 530 Valencia Street, photos from Mission Local show that the location is mostly emptied of furniture.

PARK MERCED — Stonestown Galleria’s McDonald’s has closed after a 30-year run, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Franchisee Scott Roderick told the Chronicle that the decision was a “long and difficult” process — he cited high rent and California’s new $20 minimum wage law for fast food workers as reasons for the closure.

SAN JOSE — Another location of sandwich shop Togo’s has closed in San Jose, leaving the city’s downtown area with none left, according to the Mercury News. The first Togo’s opened in San Jose in 1971.

SANTA CLARA — Family-owned Italian restaurant Fiorillo’s has closed in Santa Clara after 52 years in business, according to the Mercury News. Founders Vincent and Elaine Fiorillo emigrated from Naples to New York City and eventually resettled in Silicon Valley in 1972, where they grew Fiorillo’s from a Palo Alto delicatessen to a bustling 350-seat restaurant.

SUNNYVALE — Pezzella’s Villa Napoli, another family-owned Italian restaurant in Silicon Valley, closed June 22 after a long run, per SFGATE. “It’s been a wonderful 67-year journey, through three generations,” a statement on the restaurant’s website reads. “We have made many friends throughout the years and want to thank everyone for your love and support.”

SACRAMENTO — Solomon’s, the downtown Sacramento restaurant that opened as a modern Jewish delicatessen in 2019 before being reimagined as a diner in 2023, has closed, as has its sister music venue the Russ Room, the Sacramento Bee reports. “We are confident this will be a temporary closure as we fervently believe this special space is destined for a second life,” a statement from the restaurant reads, but per the Bee, Solomon’s appears to be for sale.

PACIFIC HEIGHTS — Tablehopper reports that Noosh on Fillmore Street has been closed for several weeks. The most recent post on the restaurant’s Instagram, from May 1, alerted customers that the restaurant would be closed for mechanical repairs but hoped to reopen soon — Tablehopper reached out for more details but hadn’t yet heard back.

BERKELEY — Berkeley’s Cabañas Cafe has closed, East Bay Nosh also reports. Angel Rodriguez opened the restaurant in 2022, serving Chiapas-style Mexican fare, though one of the restaurant’s specialties was its rendition of kurtos, the Hungarian pastry also known as “chimney cake,” which it served with ice cream and affogatos.

OAKLAND — Wood-fired Uptown Oakland restaurant Parlour, known for its Italian fare, cocktails, and wine list, closed in early June, East Bay Nosh reports. Parlour was a sister restaurant to Bar 355, according to the Nosh.

PALO ALTO — Mike’s Diner Bar, a nearly 30-year fixture of Palo Alto’s dining scene, closed permanently on June 16, as Palo Alto Online was first to report. Owner Mike Wallau said rising costs for Bay Area businesses led to the closure, which comes less than a year after the restaurant avoided eviction.

BERKELEY — 4Bells Public House, the Berkeley sports bar known for its lobster Hot Pockets, mole-doused chicken and waffles, and other creative pub fare, closed on May 26, according to East Bay Nosh. Owner Jennifer Seidman told Nosh the closure was a result of a “ten-year battle” with the property’s landlords since its days as Doc’s Refresher.

OAKLAND — Japanese black curry shop Dela Curo Curry’s Swan Market location has closed permanently, the restaurant announced on Instagram in late May. The good news is that chef Chikara Ono is now serving his trademark pork katsu curries and fluffy fruit sandwiches from a new location at Berkeley Bowl West, at 920 Heinz Avenue.

CAMPBELL — Sustainable seafood stalwart Forthright Oyster Bar & Kitchen will close at the end of June, the Mercury News reports. Co-owner Angelique Stump told the paper that the restaurant was struggling to recruit managers and veteran chefs, saying that the “high cost of living, the pandemic, the shift in culture has resulted in people not wanting to work in our industry.” She and partner chef Jim Stump will continue to operate their four other restaurants.

SACRAMENTO — Seoul St. Midtown, a modern Korean gastropub serving bibimbap and Korean-style hot chicken, has closed after a near two-year run, the Sacramento Bee reports. Owners Minnie Nguyen and Trinh Le cited “economic downturn” as the reason for the closure in a message posted to the restaurant’s website.

June 5

HAYES VALLEY — Chefs Corey Lee and Jason Berthold’s major Hayes Street restaurant Monsieur Benjamin will close for good on June 29. In an Instagram post and note on the business’s website, ownership let fans know there will be no new lease for the upscale French restaurant now that its ten-year-lease is set to expire.

INNER SUNSET — The last San Francisco outpost for Third Culture Bakery closed on Sunday, June 2. Owners Wenter Shyu and Sam Butarbutar wrote in an Instagram post the shop was difficult to staff consistently. They say this closure allows them to better focus on the flagship location in Berkeley, such as offering tours and matcha workshops.

OAKLAND — Thirty years into serving UC Berkeley students, Rockridge’s the Graduate will close permanently on June 30. SFGATE spotted the business’s farewell Facebook post, and co-owner Javad Parsa told the outlet that at nearly 86 years old he’s ready to hang up his bartender hat.

PLEASANT HILL — The Contra Costa Boulevard location for Three Brothers From China closed on Friday, May 31 following the San Ramon outpost’s closure. A tipster wrote to Eater SF saying the restaurant was closing after 32 years serving salt and pepper pork chops and sesame chicken. Multiple Yelp reviews confirm the news as diners learned the owners planned to retire once the lease ran up at the end of May.

LOS GATOS — North Santa Cruz Avenue’s beloved Charley’s closed after a banger final weekend on Sunday, June 2. The business spent more than 50 years in the community, per the Mercury News, but owner Alex Hult sold the bar to a new owner. That means, according to a note on the business’s website, a “new concept, new look, new name.”

HEALDSBURG — Second Story, the latest upstairs restaurant project inside vegan haven Little Saint, is closing. First reported by the Press Democrat, the restaurant lasted about a year; the final dinner is Friday, June 14. An Instagram post from the business confirms the space will be a full-time events venue, with the culinary team focusing on the cafe offerings downstairs instead.

SAN JOSE — Top brass at Rubio’s Coastal Grill decided to close 48 California locations of the casual fish taco chain. SFGATE reports the final Bay Area locations to go the way of the dinosaur include Sunnyvale and San Jose. A spokesperson for the business confirmed to the outlet that all Bay Area Rubio’s restaurants are now closed.
