Cupertino’s Farmers Market Faces an Uncertain Summer

A “miscommunication” between the market and Foothill-De Anza Community College District may leave Cupertino vendors high and dry come July

Cupertino’s weekly farmers market is facing an uncertain summer after a “miscommunication” between the market’s director and De Anza College, which hosts the market, Mercury News reports. The current agreement between the two parties ends July 1, but instead of extending it for another six months as it has in the past, the Foothill-De Anza Community College District solicited new bids from local farmers markets. This caught Jerry Lami, executive director of the West Coast Farmers Market Association, which runs the Cupertino market, by surprise.

Paula Norsell, a spokesperson for the district, told the Mercury News that periodically soliciting bids is simply a “good practice” to guarantee that the district has the most competitive vendor proposals. The district did send its request for proposals to West Coast, giving it the chance to return to the site — but even if its bid is selected, it’ll be finalized in September, leaving the Cupertino market high and dry for the months between, unless the district creates a workaround to allow West Coast to stay for the summer. “If I’m not successful with finding another location within Cupertino, then it’ll put 50 vendors, which are probably 400 families, out of work,” Lami told the Mercury News.

Highlights from this robot’s resume, again per Botbar’s website, include “passionate about service” and “reliable — never takes a sick day.” Hmm.
