“Product (design) development is demanding. To perform well in a leading position for at least a period requires personal qualities and drive. To repeat success in various roles and organizations takes even more, so it felt natural that Assa Abloy wanted her back when they needed to unify and propel their product design soundly. Perla has a certain combination av analytical and yet rational, calm, and smooth ways of handling demanding situations successfully. Finding beneficial ways forward for the stakeholders and leaving fruitful relationships intact, whether you make a leap or incremental progress. Besides traditional skills, I believe that Perla got good help from her premier interpersonal qualities and acting in a leading, not managing way. Add to that her curiosity, open-mindedness and transformation in symbiosis with the next.”

I got 99 problems but stakeholders ain't one? End of April I facilitated a BrainBoostBorrel for my Hike One colleagues on the topic of stakeholder management. If we talk about stakeholder management, we typically talk about handling ‘difficult’ people, those that are resistant to change. But what exactly is it that’s happening, and what skills can we leverage when we see these issues arise? I curated a set of 14 skills (with the help of chatGPT of course 😉) that we matched with existing stakeholder issues. My colleague Marco Geurs then walked us through a Rose of Leary exercise to raise awareness about the effects of our communication style in projects. In our follow up sessions we will dive deeper into Conflict resolution and Organizational awareness. I’m currently reading Supercommunicators by Charles Duhigg which touches on the first topic. If you have any other tips/resources on these two topics they’re more than welcome!

⚠ Food for thought⚠ A well-known Finnish entrepreneur accidentally exposes a discriminatory recruiting policy on SoMe. I don't wish to discuss this specific case; the issue is much deeper rooted than that. Sadly. Integrated racism in business often means that a foreign name leads to unfair assumptions about one's citizenship or language proficiency. I've experienced this firsthand, where my original surname caused people to question my abilities despite my fluency (practically native at this point) in the Finnish language. To overcome this, years ago I added my Finnish husband's surname to avoid bias—a quick and questionable fix, which not everyone has access to. It's crucial for businesses to focus on skills and qualifications, not names, to ensure true inclusivity and growth in a global market. Has this happened to you as a recruiter, or as a job applicant? How do we ensure this doesn't happen and potential talent goes to waste because of a name? #Diversity #Inclusion #BusinessEthics #GlobalBusiness #NameBias #EqualOpportunity

We have collected 36 Swedish Design Systems 🇸🇪, 32 Design System specialists (working in Sweden or on a Swedish Design System), and (sadly) currently have 2 open positions on our Design System job board. And yes, that is a lot of Design System usage in just one phrase 😅 But that's what https://lnkd.in/d8tZNVbK is all about! Do you know of, work on a Sweden made Design System? Let me know in the comments or submit it via the form (in the comments). Having a public facing website is NOT a requirement at all, all we need is the system name and/or the company it belongs to, the rest is all extra... Do you work in Design Systems in Sweden or work on a Swedish system? Write a comment or use the form in the comments! Wanna help otherwise? Share this post or the site with your network 🙏🏼 #SwedishDesignSystems #DesignSystems

As we gather to celebrate Midsummer, it’s an opportune time to reflect on Finland's spirit of innovation. At the core of this innovation is a strong social foundation. From childhood, Finland emphasizes social safety, quality education, and family support, creating an environment where creativity can thrive. Nokia's ex-CEO once attributed his success to "mother's love," highlighting the impact of a nurturing upbringing. A notable example of our forward-thinking is the introduction of free school meals when Finland was the poorest country in Europe. This initiative, driven by visionary leaders, laid the groundwork for our nation's transformation into one of the richest countries today. Consider Ville Widing, who at 15, while working a summer job at Huber warehouse, envisioned the single-lever faucet amidst countless spare parts. Despite being dismissed by manufacturers due to his age, Ville’s innovative thinking prevailed, proving that fresh ideas often stem from youthful insight. Our social structures, such as free school meals and child health clinics (neuvola), play a critical role in fostering young minds. These systems ensure children grow up healthy and well-nourished, ready to explore new ideas and take creative risks. As we enjoy the midnight sun of Midsummer, let’s celebrate the communities and social fabric that make such creativity possible. The true magic lies in our ability to foster environments where every child has the opportunity to dream, explore, and innovate. #Midsummer #Innovation #SocialSafety #FamilySupport #Creativity #VilleWiding #Community #Education #NurturingEnvironment

Extensive review of the literature reveal that in developed countries adherence to therapies averages 50%. That is HALF of all patients not adhering to their treatment! Approximately half of this non-adherence is intentional, whilst the remainder occurs because patients are either unaware that they are not taking medications as prescribed or the regimen is just too complex. We're on a mission to change that! #medicaldevice #innovation #adherence

Fun fact about a link between furniture design and organization design. Below is a picture of the conference table and chairs in the former rector's office at the former Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) main building, nowadays part of Aalto University. The building as well as the office, including the furniture in the office, were designed by famous Finnish designer and architect Alvar Aalto himself (the university is named after him). The rector had a desk, and on the other side there were chairs for his visitors, which were of course rather low compared to the height of the desk, to make it clear who's in charge. Now a problem arises for the conference table: all chairs are the same size, so how to make sure to show who's the boss? Well, Alvar Aalto came up with a solution: he custom-designed an extra cushion (in the same design as the chairs) for the rector to put under his buttocks to elevate him a few centimeters above the others who are sitting around the same table. The former TKK rector's office is nowadays used as the emeriti professor lounge. h/t Jouko Lampinen #aaltouniversity #alvaraalto #furnituredesign #organizationdesign #whostheboss

“Efterklang: The Makedonium Band” screening during the 21st Edition of Millenium DOCS Against Gravity (May 10-19. 2024) is a good example of the creative process in action. Be open to other people and their culture, don’t judge, and find time to contemplate and observe. Finally, you can achieve a union with your team and create something unique. Sounds like Theory U ;) https://lnkd.in/dgNaWunT

The logical solution to solve heavy traffic is to build more and bigger roads. It makes perfekt sense. What we don’t include in the equation is that change to system leads to change in the behaviour. If there is more space, more people will drive and very soon we will end up where we started with even more people stuck in the heavy traffic. Our logical “solution” spend a lot of money and resources and make everything even worse. There is no shortage of similar projects. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. The same principle applies even to other areas. New solutions with new possibilities create new behaviours and set new expectations. What used to a luxury becomes a commodity, the magic turns into everyday tool. In other words, the wins and saves are only apparent in the time of transition. When everybody uses the new tech, it loses its competitive advantage. Those that don’t, won’t or can’t adapt will be left behind. Until recently digitalisation was the promised land of efficiency and productivity. In certain area it delivered real value, in others the result was the opposite. Journalists were suddenly supposed to be photographers, photo editors, videographers and marketers. All that on top of their regular job with same resources and pay. Teachers whose main job is to teach should now also juggle a big administrative load. The vast amount of digital tools that were supposed to make this possible were (and still are) badly designed, built in silos, requiring double work. Other work areas were hit hard as well. The price of increased efficiency was payed by the workers, but the reward ended up somewhere else. AI is now following the same pattern. Every new AI startup boasts how much time and money their solution will save. In theory they are right. AI can be a huge productivity boost. For now. As soon as AI is on every app, tool and device and the productivity raises, the expectations and behaviours will follow. You will not get rest of the day off just because you let ChatGPT do the heavy lifting. You will get more tasks with expectations to do them even better, faster and cheaper. So how can we make sure that those new (AI powered) solutions will actually reduce complexity and remove tedious task without adding on new ones? The first part of the answer is not with more tech, but with better tech. Tech that doesn’t crave more attention and screen time. Instead it will allow users to spend more time away from screens with real humans creating real value through face to face connection and communication. The second part is to stop chasing more productivity and efficiency. The power in AI should not be used to churn out more stuff nobody needs or asked for. The last part is stop trying to solve organisational and systemic problems with new tech. New tech will not save education, welfare or sustainability. The tech is just a tool and enabler, not the solution.

Did you know that only in Finland there’s over 1,2 million people who would require accessible services? Accessibility directive and requirements are instructing authorities to make the digital services accessible for everyone. ❗ Everyone needs to be able to function fully in a digital society ❗ In addition, although in the private sector, there’s no legal requirements to comply with these at this moment, it will come and it’s better to be early than late to understand these requirements. During the last two days I had a privilege to participate in the accessibility training in which we went through the basics of the topic: ✅ a concrete update on the legal and recommended requirements of the accessibility ✅ the legal deeper understanding on how to make assessment for the accessibility ✅ tools and processes there are to help you with the accessibility assessment ✅ and the last but not the least, actually the most important, learning to take the requirements of accessible digital services more in consideration when planning and designing them (even in the private sector), whether it is the easy usability, understandability of the content or technical accessibility considerations to challenge our developers. Thank you Annika Valtari. It was great to be trained by a person who has such a passion and expertise for the topic and real case examples. You made the topic super understandable and me really wanting to take the extra effort to address these requirements on our digital services. Thank you to the other participants at the training and active, open discussions we had. It was such an inspiration to hear your thoughts and experiences. Great to have a benchmark too! Thanks Professio for organising! Totally time well spent and recommendation for this training! #accessibility #wcag #training

Andy Preston
Hello, my name is Andy Preston, originally from UK now living in Finland. A very experienced and highly motivated team player, making sure that the support I offer to your business is of the highest standard and always adds value. I am a respected and trusted member of the teams that I have worked in, and have been fortunate to work with many industry leading individuals. After 23 years at ABB, my position was made redundant, so I find myself looking for work for the 1st time in my career. Hoping to find a new, exciting and rewarding position with a motivated team. I have spent much of my career in Product management. That role is an excellent pivotal role, building a very wide range of skills and capabilities, as it touches so many parts of a business: Customers, Partners, Sales teams, the products and it's needs, the markets, the competitors, R&D, Marketing, Comms, trade shows, Training and Education. Product Management also impacts Energy Efficiency and sustainability, and I have helped customers to understand where they can really make practical savings to existing and new equipment, to meet their environmental targets. After all, Drives and motors can bring 60% savings to your operations - more effective than many other technologies! This change gives me an opportunity to have a think about the future and maybe make a change? Continuing as a product manager has been and continues to be a real "fit" for me because it touches so much of any business, so continuing in that role is of course a massive motivator but....Taking some of my real passions I am highly motivated about energy efficiency, sustainability, Learning and education, and I love combining these together! so moving specifically into this field would be exciting. As mentioned, Drives and motors bring massive savings, and teaching people how to do this is a real passion, the energy bill is the next biggest after the wages bill in many businesses and Industry in general is missing this really big savings potential. Educational establishments, Universities and Colleges would be great places where I can also bring real world industry understanding to prepare students for their careers, there is a real shortage of talented motivated Engineers, and we need to attract them to keep the world working! I currently live in Finland, and would prefer to operate from there at the moment, but of course after COVID, am perfectly happy to work remotely with any team anywhere, so in reality geography may not be that important. I would be prepared to work full time, part time or in a consulting and contracting arrangement to bring my 23 years’ experience to your businesses. Please take a look at my full profile on Linked in: https://lnkd.in/ed_wJgF2 I look forward to hearing about any opportunities you feel I might be able to help your business with. Many thanks in advance. Andy Preston andyjpreston138@gmail.com | +358 (0)44 244 8395 | +44 (0)7801 799 025

Have you ever heard of the Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO)? It’s a very common selling trend. Especially during specific periods like Black Friday. It revolves around a simple fact: Buy it now or miss the opportunity. It can take many shapes, but it is most often promoted as time-limited discounts or limited quantity products. Instinctively, users will want to jump on the opportunity. It’s the Scarcity Principle. The rarer a product seems. The more we will want to obtain it. More and more brands base their business around this strategy. We even see crazy discounts like "-50% for 24 hours" Yet those discounts are reset daily. Which makes them meaningless. The reason why the Scarcity Principle isn’t good for user experience: - Fake scarcity will easily be spotted and generate frustration. - It’s not a long-term viable strategy. - Users are becoming less naive. - It’s unethical. In UX design, we aim to address sustainable needs. That’s why manipulating users will never be a proper solution. Make a good product, build it for your users, ensure it’s viable, and promote it. What’s your opinion about FOMO and the Scarcity Principle? Let me know!

We all know that innovation is important. But a lot of big corporations struggle to succeed with innovation. From my experience there are three main challenges. Lack of resources Budget for innovation is too small and employees are tied up in billable work. Unclear direction Top management has not set clear and ambitious goals for how and where to innovate. And if they have, the goals are not being communicated enough. No incentives Managers and employees aren't being measured on innovation. They are measured on financial KPIs. So innovation isn’t prioritized. Anything to add? #CorporateInnovation

We don't have enough Swedish Designers mentoring right now... One sad reality I'm noticing is that my waiting list for mentoring is growing. As much as I would like to rub my ego by thinking I'm getting a queue of people waiting to receive my pearls of wisdom, one quick look at the list of mentors in Sweden paints a more realistic picture. Not enough mentors (and more and more paid ones also) 🫣 So if you are still reading, try pushing your imposter syndrome aside and help out someone who is struggling in this labor market right now. Yes, you have something useful to share. No, you don't need to be a super senior to mentor, there's hundreds of people on the career steps you climbed last year. Even just being a sympathetic ear could help someone isolated at home trying to find a job with little success. Moral support also counts as mentoring. As long as your motivation is to help someone else, you will learn how to become a great mentor in time! Your turn! 💪 #SwedishDesign
