As the High-Level political forum draws to a close, SEI researchers Charlotte Wagner, PhD and Jonathan Green write that the summit, which reviewed the Sustainable Development Goal on zero hunger, overlooks a key barrier to achieving that aim: the pollution that plagues small-scale fisheries and harms human health and livelihoods. From plastics to chemical pollutants, this widespread contamination threatens keystone species, deteriorates marine ecosystems and lands back in humans’ bodies through the seafood they consume. By cleaning our oceans, we can support small-scale fisheries and ease food and economic insecurity, as well as the persistent human health issues that pollution causes. Sanitation and wastewater management systems are essential for public health and environmental sustainability, yet they are significant and often overlooked contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions. The latest report by Daniel Ddiba, Mahboubeh Rahmati Abkenar, and Carla Liera explores methods for measuring and quantifying these emissions in the sanitation sector. Key highlights include: 🔹 Identifying gaps and opportunities in existing measurement methods. 🔹 Emphasising the need for adaptable greenhouse gas measurement methodologies tailored to diverse sanitation systems. 🔹 A request for collaboration to advance and standardise measurement methods. 🔹 A call for increased funding and capacity-building efforts to make advanced measurement techniques more accessible and widely available. A new report ‘Navigating New Horizons – A Global Foresight Report on Planetary Health and Human Wellbeing’ is newly launched by the UN Environment Programme and the International Science Council. It calls for the world to pay heed and respond to a range of emerging challenges that could disrupt planetary health and well-being. The report presents insights on eight critical global shifts that are accelerating the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity and nature loss and pollution and waste, and presents 18 signals of change. Read the UNEP-ISC report🔗 https://buff.ly/3WmK4ex “As witnessed over the past years, even seemingly improbable or distant disruptions or circumstances can quickly become reality. Thus, paying attention to signals of change, and exploring both prominent and weaker ones with a view to anticipate disruption and minimize surprise is paramount.” For a commentary on the report, check out this Q&A with SEI's Henrik Carlsen – member of the UNEP Expert Foresight Panel 🔗 https://buff.ly/3xOkDt7 #PlanetaryHealth #Wellbeing

In Bangkok, marginalized communities often face excessive heat due to inadequate housing and a lack of cooling measures. Internal room temperatures rise significantly higher than those in the surrounding areas, which not only presents serious health hazards but also results in substantial economic burdens. During the hottest days of the Thai summer, our researchers investigated Khlong Toey, the largest informal settlement in Bangkok, to hear how low-income households cope with extreme heat when access to air-conditioned or well-ventilated spaces is not possible. By pairing land surface temperature data with community insights, SEI's Raja Asvanon and Satish Prasad recommend a co-produced, targeted urban cooling strategy that would reduce the health risks to the vulnerable and improve outdoor thermal comfort in Bangkok. #ExtremeHeat #ClimateAdaptation
