The operator wanted to offer unlimited mobile data plans to their customers with the possibility of adding more services. Time to market was key and the project started with the mindset of figuring out performance testing along the way, relying on the functional testing equipment as performance environment. All focus was on development and no time was spent on defining performance criteria nor sizing up the testing architecture and loading test data. Getting closer to launch it was time for performance testing, but as the performance environment wasn’t ready, the project owner decided to skip it. The hope was put on the that the functional testing phase been good enough to put some load on the system and gave green light for launch. The project was launched on time, but as more customers signed up, the services offered stopped working periodically. The team worked around the clock to keep the services up and debugging the performance problem. Hot fixes were added real-time before the rollout was stopped and put on pause until a proper solution was in place.
