A Comprehensive Overview on Stress Neurobiology: Basic Concepts and Clinical Implications

Abstract: Stress is recognized as an important issue in basic and clinical neuroscience research, based upon the founding historical studies by Walter Canon and Hans Selye in the past century, when the concept of stress emerged in a biological and adaptive perspective. A lot of research after that period has expanded the knowledge in the stress field. Since then, it was discovered that the response to stressful stimuli is elaborated and triggered by the, now known, stress system, which integrates a wide diversity of bra… Show more

“…Transferring to the isolation ward, changes in environment and healthcare workers, and suspected COVID-19 itself could be stressors for patients. 15 Depression, anxiety and poor sleep quality could occur under stress. [16][17][18] The lessons learnt from the severe acute respiratory syndrome and Ebola outbreaks indicated that challenges and stress could trigger common mental disorders, including anxiety and depressive disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder, 19 20 which in turn could result in hazards that exceed the consequences of the infection itself.…”

“…These questions have long been of interest for psychology and psychiatry. To mention only a few major lines of inquiry, the psychodynamic tradition has related affect to contests between desires and constraints; the stress and coping tradition has elucidated cognitive antecedents and physiological consequences of affect; and the affective neuroscience tradition has revealed some of the brain mechanisms underlying affective behaviors.…”

“…Stress is triggered when various psychological, physiological or environmental stressors induce a state of threatened homeostasis (1). Stress has be en identified as a risk factor in 75-90% of all diseases, including those that lead to morbidity and mortality (2).…”
