Effect of sleep posture on neck muscle activity

Abstract: [Purpose] This study investigated the effect of sleep posture on neck muscle activity. [Subjects and Methods] The study recruited 20 healthy subjects, who were positioned in three supine sleeping positions: both hands at sides, both hands on the chest, and dominant hand on the forehead. The activities of the scalene and upper trapezius muscles bilaterally were measured by surface electromyography. [Results] The upper trapezius and scalene muscle activity on the right side was significantly greater in the supin… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the supine position has been associated with a lower level of activity of the right scalenus and the trapezius muscle, which can explain the decrease in LB at the C3–C4 and C4–C5 segments. 46 On top of this, the increased contribution of the C6–C7 segment to LB in this position may indicate the anterior and superior shift of the center of rotation observed at this level. 1 , 81 (see Fig.…”

“…Therefore, sleep quality affects human health and the standard of living. Meanwhile, sleep posture is associated with sleep quality [2]. Poor cervical posture can lead to cervical pain and stiffness, headaches, and scapular pain during sleep.…”

“…More than twenty muscles in the neck are involved in cervical activity and maintaining posture. Among these muscles, signi cantly activated muscles are more closely related to NSP [9]. There is limited research on the relationship between neck muscle activity and different cervical curvatures, which leads to a lack of education about the relationship between lifestyle and standard healthy cervical curvature.…”
