Performance of a pilot scale microbial electrolysis cell fed on domestic wastewater at ambient temperatures for a 12 month period

Abstract: A 100-L microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) was operated for a 12-month period fed on raw domestic wastewater at temperatures ranging from 1°C to 22°C, producing an average of 0.6 L/day of hydrogen. Gas production was continuous though decreased with time. An average 48.7% of the electrical energy input was recovered, with a Coulombic efficiency of 41.2%. COD removal was inconsistent and below the standards required. Limitations to the cell design, in particular the poor pumping system and large overpotential ac… Show more

“…Larrosa-Guerrero et al [16] using a mixture of domestic and brewery wastewater found an unequivocally linear relationship between temperature and current density and a Q 10 for power density of 1.6 Ahn and Logan, [17] using domestic wastewater and Wang et al [18] [19]. Interestingly, this makes BES compare favourably with analogous studies in methanogenic systems where Q 10 values range from 2 to 4 [20] and temperature sensitivity can be problematic.…”

“…The cold temperature represents the lower quartile of the temperatures experienced at a pilot MEC reactor run at ambient temperatures on a wastewater treatment site in the North of England (54°58′N, 01°36′W) [19]. The substrates were acetate, the most commonly used laboratory feed, and sterilised real wastewater.…”

“…Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) (Logan, 2008) and other microbial electrochemical systems (Heidrich et al, 2014) rely on the growth and function of a group of organisms -known as exoelectrogenscapable of transferring electrons outside their cell walls (Logan, 2009). Although the functions of these bacteria within MFCs are well understood, little is known about their abundance in the wastewaters and sludges used to inoculate these systems, and about their absolute numbers within working systems (Logan, 2009;Torres, 2014).…”

“…In reality, if the BES is to fulfill its potential as a full-scale wastewater treatment technology, many gaps still need to be bridged to take this concept closer to the reality (Heidrich et al 2014). To this end, in the past two years, some researchers have started to carry out scale-up investigations of BES involving the testing mixtures of contaminants or even real wastewater, as well as extending the operating time to at least a half year (Dong et al 2015;Heidrich et al 2014;Ma et al 2015;Nguyen et al 2014;Nguyen et al 2013).…”

However, most of these works have relied on reactors with specialized designs, such as the sMDC (integrating a microbial desalination cell and anaerobic digestion reactor) (Zhang and Angelidaki, 2015), UASB-BES , rotating hanging media bioreactor (Nguyen et al 2014), etc.…”
