Regulation of gene expression at the beginning of mammalian development and the TEAD family of transcription factors

KJ Kaneko, ML DePamphilis- Developmental genetics, 1998 - Wiley Online Library
In mouse development, transcription is first detected in late 1‐cell embryos, but translation of
newly synthesized transcripts does not begin until the 2‐cell stage. Thus, the onset of zygotic
gene expression (ZGE) is regulated at the level of both transcription and translation.
Chromatin‐mediated repression is established after formation of a 2‐cell embryo, concurrent
with the developmental acquisition of enhancer function. The most effective enhancer in
cleavage stage mouse embryos depends on DNA binding sites for TEF‐1, the prototype for…

[HTML][HTML] On the age of the nearby blue compact dwarf galaxy SBS 0335-052

P Papaderos, YI Izotov, KJ Fricke…- …and Astrophysics, v…, 1998 - adsabs.harvard.edu
UBVRI surface photometry and long-slit spectrophotometric observations are used to
investigate the evolutionary status and put constraints on the age of the underlying stellar
population of the eastern component of a nearby pair of dwarf galaxies, the blue compact
dwarf galaxy SBS\0335-052E. We show that ionized gas emission extending out to
distances ga 1 kpc from the central complex of super-star clusters (SSC) can significantly
influence the observed colour distribution of the underlying component. After correction for…

Mandibular distraction osteogenesis: a comparison of distraction rates in the rabbit model

KJ Stewart, GO Lvoff, SA White, SF Bonar…- Journal of Cranio…, 1998 - Elsevier
The rabbit model has been used to study the effects of different rates of distraction upon
mandibular bone. Bilateral distraction was performed at two different rates anterior to the
molar teeth. Both experimental groups were significantly inferior to sham operated controls
in terms of bone density (DEXA) and mechanical testing. No difference in new bone
formation between the two distraction rates was detected by these modalities. However,
histological examination revealed non-union to be more common in the rapidly distracted…

GDNF and its receptor component Ret in injured human nerves and dorsal root ganglia

KJ Br, GJF Saldanha, AJ Kennedy, P Facer…- …, 1998 - journals.lww.com
GLIAL cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is trophic to motor and sensory neurones
in animal models. GDNF mRNA is up-regulated in Schwann cells after peripheral nerve
injury in rats. We have quantified and localized GDNF and its receptor component Ret, for
the first time in any species, in injured human peripheral nerves and dorsal root ganglia
(DRG) avulsed from the spinal cord. Significantly higher levels of GDNF were found in nerve
distal to the site of the injury than in proximal or intact nerve, and in avulsed DRG than in…

[HTML][HTML] Zinc deficiency changes preferred macronutrient intake in subpopulations of Sprague-Dawley outbred rats and reduces hepatic pyruvate kinase gene…

KJ Kennedy, TM Rains, NF Shay- The Journal of nutrition, 1998 - Elsevier
Macronutrient selection patterns of male rats were analyzed using a 3-choice macronutrient
selection system providing either adequate (+ Zn) or deficient (− Zn) levels of zinc (30 or 1
mg Zn/kg). In study 1, rats were provided+ Zn and− Zn diets for 28 d. All rats preferred
carbohydrate (> 50% carbohydrate intake) at the onset, consuming an average of 71%
carbohydrate (cho), 17% protein (pro), and 12% fat. By the end of the study, 25% of the− Zn
rats switched preference from cho to fat, whereas no+ Zn rats changed. In study 2,− Zn rats…

Voltammetric measurement of anion adsorption on Ag (111)

KJ Stevenson, X Gao, DW Hatchett, HS White- Journal of Electroanalytical…, 1998 - Elsevier
Voltammetric measurement of the oxidative adsorption of 14 anions at Ag (111) is reported.
The Ag (111) electrodes are prepared by thermal deposition of Ag onto mica, followed by
extensive thermal annealing in vacuum to produce clean, atomically-smooth,(111)-oriented
surfaces. These electrodes display unusually well-resolved voltammetric responses towards
anion adsorption. Typical cyclic voltammetric responses in aqueous solutions containing
halides (F−, Cl−, Br−, I−), hydrosulfide and thiolates (CnH2n+ 1S−, n= 0, 2, 6), and…
