VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV): The public ESO near-IR variability survey of the Milky Way

D Minniti, PW Lucas, JP Emerson, RK Saito, M Hempel…- New Astronomy, 2010 - Elsevier
We describe the public ESO near-IR variability survey (VVV) scanning the Milky Way bulge
and an adjacent section of the mid-plane where star formation activity is high. The survey
will take 1929h of observations with the 4-m VISTA telescope during 5 years (2010–2014),
covering∼ 109 point sources across an area of 520deg2, including 33 known globular
clusters and∼ 350 open clusters. The final product will be a deep near-IR atlas in five
passbands (0.9–2.5 μm) and a catalogue of more than 106 variable point sources. Unlike…

Abiotic stresses and induced BVOCs

F Loreto, JP Schnitzler- Trends in plant science, 2010 - cell.com
Plants produce a wide spectrum of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in various
tissues above and below ground to communicate with other plants and organisms. However,
BVOCs also have various functions in biotic and abiotic stresses. For example abiotic
stresses enhance BVOCs emission rates and patterns, altering the communication with
other organisms and the photochemical cycles. Recent new insights on biosynthesis and
eco-physiological control of constitutive or induced BVOCs have led to formulation of…

[HTML][HTML] First two autochthonous dengue virus infections in metropolitan France, September 2010

G La Ruche, Y Souars, A Armengaud…- …, 2010 - eurosurveillance.org
In September 2010, two cases of autochthonous dengue fever were diagnosed in
metropolitan France for the first time. The cases occurring in Nice, south-east France, where
Aedes albopictus is established, are evidence of dengue virus circulation in this area. This
local transmission of dengue calls for further enhanced surveillance, active case finding and
vector control measures to reduce the spread of the virus and the risk of an epidemic.

Atrial fibrillation is independently associated with senile, vascular, and Alzheimer's dementia

TJ Bunch, JP Weiss, BG Crandall, HT May, TL Bair…- Heart rhythm, 2010 - Elsevier
BACKGROUND: The aging population has resulted in more patients living with
cardiovascular disease, such as atrial fibrillation (AF). Recent focus has been placed on
understanding the long-term consequences of chronic cardiovascular disease, such as a
potential increased risk of dementia. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine whether
there is an association between AF and dementia and whether their coexistence is an
independent marker of risk. METHODS: A total of 37,025 consecutive patients from the large…

The influence of different sitting postures on head/neck posture and muscle activity

JP Caneiro, P O'Sullivan, A Burnett, A Barach, D O'Neil…- Manual therapy, 2010 - Elsevier
To date the influence that specific sitting posture has on the head/neck posture and cervico-
thoracic muscle activity has been insufficiently investigated. Therefore the aim of this study
was to investigate whether three different thoraco-lumbar sitting postures affect head/neck
posture and cervico-thoracic muscle activity. Twenty (10 men, 10 women) asymptomatic
subjects were placed in 3 standardized thoraco-lumbar sitting postures (lumbo-pelvic,
thoracic upright and slump) to investigate their influence on cervico-thoracic muscle activity…

Energy management of a fuel cell/supercapacitor/battery power source for electric vehicular applications

M Zandi, A Payman, JP Martin…- IEEE transactions on…, 2010 - ieeexplore.ieee.org
This paper presents an energy management method in an electrical hybrid power source
(EHPS) for electric vehicular applications. The method is based on the flatness control
technique (FCT) and fuzzy logic control (FLC). This EHPS is composed of a fuel cell system
as the main source and two energy storage sources (ESSs)-a bank of supercapacitors (SCs)
and a bank of batteries (BATs)-as the auxiliary source. With this hybridization, the volume
and mass of the EHPS can be reduced, because the high energy density of BAT and high…

[HTML][HTML] Nitrogen fertilizer management for nitrous oxide (N2O) mitigation in intensive corn (Maize) production: an emissions reduction protocol for US Midwest…

N Millar, GP Robertson, PR Grace, RJ Gehl…- …adaptation strategies for…, 2010 - Springer
Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is a major greenhouse gas (GHG) product of intensive agriculture.
Fertilizer nitrogen (N) rate is the best single predictor of N 2 O emissions in row-crop
agriculture in the US Midwest. We use this relationship to propose a transparent,
scientifically robust protocol that can be utilized by developers of agricultural offset projects
for generating fungible GHG emission reduction credits for the emerging US carbon cap and
trade market. By coupling predicted N 2 O flux with the recently developed maximum return…

JP Bispo Jnior- Cincia & Sade Coletiva, 2010 - SciELO Public Health
O fisioterapeuta vem destinando sua ateno, quase que exclusivamente, cura de
doentes e reabilitao de sequelados. No entanto, o novo perfil epidemiolgico e a nova
