Parturition, dystocia and foal survival: a retrospective study of 1047 births

PM McCue, RA Ferris- Equine Veterinary Journal, 2012 - Wiley Online Library
Reason for performing study: An understanding of the normal events of foaling, causes of
dystocia and clinical outcomes is important for equine practitioners. Objectives: The goals of
the present study were to: 1) evaluate factors that influence gestation length; 2) report
duration of Stage II labour; 3) determine the frequency of dystocia and premature placental
separation; and 4) determine the relationship between problems at foaling and foal survival.
Materials and methods: Foaling records of 1047 mare births were evaluated. Results: The…

Luminosity functions of Spitzer-identified protostars in nine nearby molecular clouds

E Kryukova, ST Megeath, RA Gutermuth…- The Astronomical…, 2012 - iopscience.iop.org
We identify protostars in Spitzer surveys of nine star-forming (SF) molecular clouds within 1
kpc: Serpens, Perseus, Ophiuchus, Chamaeleon, Lupus, Taurus, Orion, Cep OB3, and Mon
R2, which combined host over 700 protostar candidates. These clouds encompass a variety
of SF environments, including both low-mass and high-mass SF regions, as well as dense
clusters and regions of sparsely distributed star formation. Our diverse cloud sample allows
us to compare protostar luminosity functions in these varied environments. We combine near…

The 15-M movement and the new media: A case study of how new themes were introduced into Spanish political discourse

A Casero-Ripolls, RA Feenstra- Media International…, 2012 - journals.sagepub.com
The 15-M Movement, driven by mass mobilisations calling for the regeneration of the
political system in May 2011, has had a profound impact on Spanish political discourse. This
article analyses the changes in news production and distribution resulting from the example
set by this social movement. The introduction of news using social media outside the
boundaries established by the journalistic and political elites represents an innovative
strategy to bring the movement's demands on to the mainstream media agenda, and to…

Continuum halos in nearby galaxies: an EVLA survey (CHANG-ES). I. Introduction to the survey

J Irwin, R Beck, RA Benjamin, RJ Dettmar…- The Astronomical…, 2012 - iopscience.iop.org
We introduce a new survey to map the radio continuum halos of a sample of 35 edge-on
spiral galaxies at 1.5 GHz and 6 GHz in all polarization products. The survey is exploiting the
new wide bandwidth capabilities of the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (ie, the Expanded
Very Large Array) in a variety of array configurations (B, C, and D) in order to compile the
most comprehensive data set yet obtained for the study of radio halo properties. This is the
first survey of radio halos to include all polarization products. In this first paper, we outline…

[HTML][HTML] Ethnoveterinary knowledge and practices at Colares island, Par state, eastern Amazon, Brazil

RA Ritter, MVB Monteiro, FOB Monteiro…- Journal of…, 2012 - Elsevier
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The lack of ethnoveterinary surveys in Brazil,
especially in the Amazon region, results in losses in the veterinary phytopharmacology field
and in scientific documentation of the cultural traditions of plant use in the treatment of
animal diseases. AIM OF THE STUDY: To catalog, analyze and disseminate the
ethnoveterinary knowledge of the inhabitants of Colares Island, Par state, eastern Amazon,
Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 72 interviews were conducted, and semi…

Fermi large area telescope study of cosmic rays and the interstellar medium in nearby molecular clouds

M Ackermann, M Ajello, A Allafort…- The Astrophysical…, 2012 - iopscience.iop.org
We report an analysis of the interstellar γ-ray emission from the Chamaeleon, R Coronae
Australis (R CrA), and Cepheus and Polaris flare regions with the Fermi Large Area
Telescope. They are among the nearest molecular cloud complexes, within∼ 300 pc from
the solar system. The γ-ray emission produced by interactions of cosmic rays (CRs) and
interstellar gas in those molecular clouds is useful to study the CR densities and
distributions of molecular gas close to the solar system. The obtained γ-ray emissivities…

A controlled clinical trial with pirfenidone in the treatment of pathological skin scarring caused by burns in pediatric patients

J Armendariz-Borunda, I Lyra-Gonzalez…- Annals of plastic…, 2012 - journals.lww.com
Background: Pathologic skin scarring reversion remains a big challenge for surgeons, as
disfiguring scars have a dramatic influence on patient's quality of life. Methods: A controlled
clinical trial was conducted to evaluate 8% pirfenidone (PFD) gel administered topically 3
times a day during 6 months to 33 pediatric patients with hypertrophic scars caused by
burns. A total of 30 patients with hypertrophic scars with identical Vancouver Scar Scale
values were treated with pressure therapy and included as controls. Improvements were…

From shoots to roots: transport and metabolic changes in tomato after simulated feeding by a specialist lepidopteran

S Gmez, AD Steinbrenner, S Osorio…- Entomologia…, 2012 - Wiley Online Library
Upon herbivory, plants can swiftly reallocate newly acquired resources to different tissues
within a plant. Although the herbivore‐induced movement of resources is apparent, the
movement direction and the role of the remobilized resources are not well understood. Here,
we used a two‐pronged approach combining radioisotope and metabolomic techniques to
shed light on whole‐plant resource reallocation and changes in primary metabolism within
the tomato, Solanum lycopersicum (L.)(Solanaceae), model in response to simulated…

[PDF][PDF] Synthesis and characterizations of silica nanoparticles by a new sol-gel method

B Gorji, MRA Ghasri, R Fazaeli…- Journal of Applied…, 2012 - academia.edu
Silica nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical methods from tetraethylorthosilicate
(TEOS), polyethylene glycol 5% and hydrochloric acid 0.001 N. The sol-gel process was
applied for the preparation of nano silica gel. This method is hydrolysis and condensation
reactions of TEOS as precursor of silica. The optimal synthesis conditions for the preparation
of silica nanoparticles were obtained and the produced silica nanoparticles were
characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and…

In vitro antiplasmodial activity of selected Luo and Kuria medicinal plants

BO Owuor, JO Ochanda, JO Kokwaro…- Journal of…, 2012 - Elsevier
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Drug resistance in malaria is a recurring
subject that threatens public health globally. There is an urgent need to seek new
antimalarial agents. This study seeking new antimalarials from medicinal plants is guided by
ethnobotany. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medicinal plants of the Luo and Kuria ethnic
groups of Kenya with high usage reports were screened in vitro for their antiplasmodial
activity using the SYBR Green I fluorescence assay (MSF assay). RESULTS: The IC50's for…
