To the editor In a recent article published in this journal, the author argues that the# ChurchInAction hashtag plays a more political role and is a symbol of activism against the emerging antichurch sentiment at the onset of intense lockdowns during the pandemic. 1 This paper hopes to add to this discussion, but I want to argue that hashtags are important social media platforms to foster a national or international collaboration and rapidly disseminate information or keep the lines of communication among people. Hashtags are words or phrases that follow the hash or pound sign (#). The hash turns the word/phrase into a searchable link so anyone can click on it and see everything with that hashtag in real-time. 2 How do hashtags play a key role in terms of becoming a lifeline among people during a global pandemic such as COVID-19? It is a well-known fact that COVID-19 is a trending topic in the media. 3 With extensive coronavirus hashtag glossary, people of all walks of life are sharing various sentiments and interests about their newfound time at home, such as:# Covid19/# Covid-19/# Coronavirus,# Stay HomeStaySafe,# StayHome,# QuarantineandChill,# LockdownNow,# Covidiots,# MyPandemicSurvivalPlan,# FlattenTheCurve,# SocialDistancing,# TogetherAtHome,# Big OnlinePar, etc. 4
In the Philippines where Filipinos spent 4 hours on different social media platforms, especially on Twitter and Facebook, 5 people are using hashtags to convey actions and updates; hashtags like# Covid19Quarantine so to give them updates on areas under quarantine;# ReliefPH+# Covid19PH as about relief operations and donations;# LuzonLockdown for Luzon to give updates on the enhanced community quarantine for Luzon. 6 As many netizens are keenly watching out for the work of their respective government units (LGU’s) and many people are working at home, netizens expressed their appreciations and/or frustrations using hashtags.
