The exploitation of locally abundant, yet regionally scarce resources has long been
considered a causal factor in the development of political centralization and the
intensification of social complexity. The production and distribution of ground stone
commodities have been suggested as the means by which the Olmec site of Tres Zapotes
rose to prominence and articulated with the political economy of the Southern Gulf Coast of
Mexico during the Terminal Formative and Early Classic Periods.
