The present immunohistochemical study set out to determine the extent of perivascular
innervation in the rat heart, using markers for noradrenergic sympathetic fibres (tyrosine
hydroxylase= TH), cholinergic parasympathetic fibres (vesicular acetylcholine transporter=
VAChT), nitrergic fibres (neuronal NO synthase= nNOS), and peptidergic sensory fibres
