Tula, Hidalgo, was one of several sites that rose to prominence during the Epiclassic period
(Figure 26.1) after the demise of Teotihuacan, and during the Early Postclassic period was
probably the largest and most influential center in central Mexico. For over a century various

The site of Tula has been the center of controversy since scholars first proposed that it
comprised the ruins of Tollan, the legendary capital of the Toltec empire that dominated
Central Mexico and other parts of Mesoamerica from circa AD 900 to 1200. This long-
