Based on archaeological analysis (eg, ceramics, architecture, and metallurgy), in
conjunction with linguistics, documentary, and traditional histories, Castro-Leal attempts to
trace the origin and development of the Tarascan nation-state from approximately 1100 BP
(900 AD) to 470 BP (1530 AD) at the time of the Spanish conquests. The compilation of data
is then compared to other parts of Mesoamerica to show (according to the author) a common
origin of political institutions throughout the area.
