BACKGROUND: Several lines of evidence suggest dysfunction of the γ-aminobutyric acid
(GABA) ergic system in major depressive disorder. Neuroimaging studies report reduced
levels of GABA in the dorsolateral prefrontal and occipital cortex of depressed patients. Our
